Call to Citerna

Thursday, December 11, 2008. We visited Florence about four times during our trip since it was only about a thirty minute train ride from our hotel. Florence was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and this city became an artistic haven for so many famous Renaissance artists and architects. Looking at the dome of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore from the bell tower. The Baptistery and town square as viewed from the tower. It was here that Savanorola was later executed by an angry mob. Cortona...

Call to Citerna: Isle of Patmos

http://www.europeinablog.blogspot.com/2008/10/isle-of-patmos.html

Wednesday, October 8, 2008. However, what historians really are sure about is that this cave really is the cave where John received the vision for Revelations. He was quite an old man at this point in time and was probably spared from death by the Romans due to his age. Here's what Revelation 1:9-18 reads:. I, John, both. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, 11. Saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,”. He had in His right hand...

Call to Citerna: Cortona, Italy

http://www.europeinablog.blogspot.com/2008/12/cortona-italy.html

Wednesday, December 10, 2008. Cortona is a small town now, but it was a very important city in antiquity. Most likely, it was first built by the Etruscans nearly three thousand years ago, and became one of their most important cities. In the picture below, the rocks at the very bottom of the wall (the largest stones) come from the original wall that protected the city during Etruscan times! The town hall in the town square of Cortona. Looking over the roof of the Duomo and into the Tuscan valley at sunset.

Many of the marble columns were made from the ruins of Roman temples in the area. I believe this is an ancient Roman bridge that has been recently remodeled. Anyway, even if it isn't a Roman bridge, it still looks cool! I think I'm too skinny and bony, so I have no soft cushion from the concrete! The bell tower, formally one.

Faulkner/Freed-Hardeman Study Abroad 2008. Classes, Visitors, and a Party. We have had five consecutive days of class since Monday, and everyone has been in the thick of the school routine. Students are working on papers on projects, and things are proceeding much like they did last week. There have been more soccer games, and a group went to see one of the professional matches a couple of nights ago (at a cost of 50 euros per ticket—too rich for my blood! This evening we are having a "Harvest Party" her...

Faulkner/Freed-Hardeman Study Abroad 2008. Our end-of-semester banquet was Thursday evening. We had steak! After a fine meal, Terry serenaded the group with a Neapolitan song, accompanying himself on the guitar. Then we watched a slideshow Jonathan had put together. Nearly everyone appeared in it, but a few students were very overrepresented because most people didn't give Jonathan any photos to put into the show. Many pictures were taken afterwards while everyone was still dressed up. A Day in Assisi.
