Relatively little has ever been written about the Jeds, which is surprising when one considers the very substantial contribution they made to D-Day's success. The initiative had come originally from SOE's director, Colin Gubbins, in a note dated 6 July 1942 to SOE's Security Section which was responsible for the allocation of all operational cryptonyms. Harry Verlander: My War in SOE. Henry Arthur Verlander, the second of five children, was born in Bromley-by-Bow in 1925. Known since his baptism as Harry, he was always proud to say he is a real cockney. He was the youngest of the British Jedburghs. In the summer of 1939, he was evacuated to Beccles, Suffolk, with his younger sister. Here he learned to poach game, a skill which would prove invaluable.
