Restoring the Roost: June 2015
http://restoringtheroost.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2015. I thought I would share with you today some farm scenes I shot while in Martin County, North Carolina. I'm sure you all know how much of a sucker I am for old farmhouses and outbuildings :). A frame barn or pack house sits along the path to other farm outbuildings at the Bowen Farm. The Bowen Farm, whose main house is a frame "Triple-A" I-house with exterior end chimneys and a rear ell. An unidentified set of outbuildings sits at the back of a dilapidated farm complex. Even though...

Restoring the Roost: March 2015
http://restoringtheroost.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Friday, March 27, 2015. When cooking, I prefer to use recipes that are written down or onto something, rather than from a computer tablet or phone. I like to be able to see a recipe simply and clearly and it's important that I can access it very quickly. I still like to use the internet as a source for finding great recipes, but if it becomes a regular favorite I will write it down eventually. My mother-in-law gave me this recipe box with family recipes inside as a wedding gift :). I also use a lot of re...

Am the proud mama to a small flock of chickens that we recently started raising in our backyard. We LOVE our chickens- I can't say enough about how much fun they are to keep! Restoring the Roost: December 2014
http://restoringtheroost.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 30, 2014. We recently made some changes to the entry. I wanted something that was more functional, with space to put our coats, scarves, purses, etc. when we step in the door and perhaps even take our shoes off. Almost more like a mudroom I guess, except I wanted it to be pretty and classic looking. Our old entry is shown in this post. And I kept a lot of the basic elements in place. Here is a picture of it below:. And here are some more shots of the updated entryway:. So that's my entr...

Restoring the Roost: February 2015
http://restoringtheroost.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Monday, February 23, 2015. A few weekends back I made an impulse decision. I saw an ad on Craigslist for a trio of guinea fowl and I just couldn't pass it up. We already had a pen that was ready and empty (former turkey pen), and guineas just sounded like fun to have. Plus, we are already getting EGGS from them! As I was reading up more on guinea fowl, I also learned these cool things:. Guineas are incredible foragers and if allowed to free-range, will not eat much in feed. Guineas are great at sounding ...

Restoring the Roost: October 2014
http://restoringtheroost.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 29, 2014. An October Day's Garden Harvest. I can't believe I am still getting veggies (planted in spring) out of the garden in October! Granted, I took this photo about a week or so ago, but still I was happy to have anything left at this point. We did plant some more garden crops for the fall such as lettuce, garlic, kale, arugula, and peas. The rest of the garden now has to be pulled up and the soil prepped. Are you growing anything in your garden for fall? Megan @ Restoring the Roost.

Restoring the Roost: Learning from Mom: Spring Decorating
http://restoringtheroost.blogspot.com/2015/05/learning-from-mom-spring-decorating.html
Saturday, May 9, 2015. Learning from Mom: Spring Decorating. In honor of Mother's Day, I'd like to talk about how my mom has influenced my design aesthetic. Growing up, she always had a very good sense of style in terms of fashion and in dressing me. Even today my friends comment how she always looks cute! My screened in porch. Here are a few snapshots of what her old house looked like:. Today I've decided to share with you some of my spring decorating. This post is being published in collaboration w...

Restoring the Roost: This Place Matters!
http://restoringtheroost.blogspot.com/2011/08/this-place-matters.html
Sunday, August 28, 2011. Historic Preservation can mean many different things to different individuals. Sure, it's about preserving, restoring and rehabiltating historic structures, it means saving our high style as well as our vernacular architectural history, it's even associated with economics and sustainability, but I think even more importantly preservation should be about. Former Sellars Manufacturing Company textile mill, now rehabilitated and adaptively reused, Saxapahaw, NC. Advocate for the imp...
