He and I had been practicing in the calmer backwaters of the Gooseberry River and he was ready to try his hand at skipping flat, wave-worn rocks into the wind and waves of the world’s largest lake. I got a taste for this early in life in the Armed Forces, when I left I carried it on through friends, colleagues and family.
