What does cataract surgery do? Introduction (IOL and Cataract). The IOL stays in your eye permanently; it will not wear out. Only very rarely are there problems with the lens so that it would need to be changed. Do I need a cataract operation? Whenever a cloudy human lens (or cataract) interferes with vision, an operation to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens (intraocular lens or IOL) will improve vision. The decision as to whether to have the operation depends on the severity of your symptoms and whether or not you feel that the small risks. Involved in surgery are worth taking to get better vision. After the anaesthetic has been given the skin around the eye will be gently cleaned with an antiseptic solution. The operation (see next section for details) takes about fifteen minutes; it should be painless and not unpleasant. At the end the sheet will be removed, the eye will be cleaned again and you will be helped back to the lounge. After another 20 30 minutes I will examine your eye before you go home.
