Crystal Structures

Below are the unit cells for a number of crystals that we have studied using EXAFS. Some are given in stereo projection with an angle of -2 degrees. Cross your eyes slightly to view them in 3-D. NSF support: DMR007186, DMR0301971. Clathrate - structure showing cages as solid polyhedra. Clathrate - transparent to show "guest" atoms inside cages. Clathrate Cage Structure - 20 atoms in smaller cage; 24 atoms in larger. Double Layer Perovskite Structure. Bilayer Within the Double Layer Perovskite.

Structural Aspects of Condensed Matter Systems. Materials they have discovered the unusual phenomena of negatively correlated displacements for some pairs of atoms. In the CMR materials they find a large change in the O disorder (associated with polaron formation) about the Mn atoms that is correlated with the sample magnetization.
