the cat is away: On bailing: a lucky dip of reasons
http://thecatisaway.blogspot.com/2014/12/on-bailing-lucky-dip-of-reasons.html
The cat is away. Sunday, December 21, 2014. On bailing: a lucky dip of reasons. I thought I would begin this somewhat-negative post with a picture of my favourite part of Dili - I don't have a good reason, but whenever I motorbiked through that particular arch-way (tree, flowering tree, palm trees) I would think Dili is so beautiful. I didn't always think Dili was beautiful, or a want to be there, so this was a note-worthy little spot. Well, I guess the apple hasn’t fallen that far after all. I'm not in ...

the cat is away: June 2014
http://thecatisaway.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
The cat is away. Saturday, June 14, 2014. The Ha My TT Limited. Use it's so good' theory applies very strongly to Hoi An. Yes, there are tourists. Yes, you might get ripped off. But you'll also be wandering around the streets pictured above, you'll be eating some of the most famous Vietnamese cuisine and you'll be surrounded by products you want to buy (anti-consumerist tendencies notwithstanding); tailored clothing, handmade leather bags and straw hats to name a few. With my new straw hat. The ocean is ...

the cat is away: July 2014
http://thecatisaway.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
The cat is away. Sunday, July 27, 2014. Too Cool for Halong Bay. One of the main annoyances tourists leave Vietnam with is the tours. In Vietnam, it's common to be told that a tour is the cheapest/ best/ only. Way to see a certain place. And, in the case of Ha Long bay, that's largely true. The problem is that the tours make you feel like you're. T a British boarding school, circa 1950 ("Now you relax for twenty minutes! I didn't want to show my friend that. What are you looking at Tobias? And if you sti...

the cat is away: Hermit Den
http://thecatisaway.blogspot.com/2015/01/hermit-den.html
The cat is away. Sunday, January 4, 2015. For a paltry $25 and went to Ubud. I had my own little kitchen and a princess bed and a motorbike and stillness, so I fully embraced my quiet side and spent three days barely speaking to anyone. I motorbiked around, strolled the streets of Ubud and read my book (American Psycho). I cooked my own breakfast every morning in a ritualistic fashion and thus discovered the great joy of self-catering. Having your own kitchen is great because:. But due to the presence of...

Weasel War Dance: 27/12/12: Lower Fu#k'in Hutt
http://weasel-war-dance.blogspot.com/2012/12/271212-lower-fuk-hutt.html
Or the Dance of the Sugar Plum Weasel. Thursday, 27 December 2012. 27/12/12: Lower Fu#kin Hutt. I saw this guy at Westfield (the huge mall) in Lower Hutt and I knew I had to dedicate a blog entry to him. I followed him for ages trying to get a good shot but I felt like a stalker so this is the best I could get. He was carrying his toddler around with him. I'm a sucker for a well written character. the cat is away: May 2014
http://thecatisaway.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
The cat is away. Sunday, May 4, 2014. Train travel for Romantics. Five years ago I took the train from Hanoi to Saigon with two American friends. We each turned up prepared with copious booze and cigarettes, each assuming that the other two would be sensible and bring snacks and hydration. Nope. The train had no restaurant car, so we spent the next two days buying all. The chicken and sticky rice, whenever an old lady came by selling it, and feeling like survivalist vagabonds. Some creatures say HI.

the cat is away: Rangoon (in flux)
http://thecatisaway.blogspot.com/2015/03/rangoon-in-flux.html
The cat is away. Sunday, March 29, 2015. When I arrived in Yangon I was struck by the Indianness. Of it - or, more specifically, how Kolkata. It was. I put this down to the obvious factors: both of these cities are ex British colonies, with buildings like that one pictured above (maybe an old school? All the same, right beside the busiest highways and byways there is an area which was introduced to me as 'the secret garden.' If you want to sell something to me, calling it 'the secret garden' is a rea...
