Excel Engineering Ltd. was founded approximately 10 years ago. It was prompted by the frustration of bad quality engineering practices found elsewhere. Sub-standard workmanship and a desire only for a quick turn-around and payment seemed to be the norm. Since establishment we have tried to create a service beyond anything else available. Our desire for quality and personal service continues today with many loyal clients not willing to use anyone else. Excel Engineering is a community orientated business.

In early 2005, Excel Engineering’s Managing Director Royden Piebenga was approached by a friend regarding an advertisement in a local Jet Boating Magazine. The advertisement was for the sale of fabrication equipment and jigs for Jet Boat Building. After much thought, Royden decided to contact the seller of this equipment, Mr. Alf Dick. Excel Enginering Ltd. now has a Demonstration Boat available for potential clients and always has boats and parts at different steps of fabrication at the workshop.

On the left side the cupboard is harbouring our fire wood box, great idea. the faces of the draws are made out of wattle, macrocarpa, blue gum, and oregon, the handle however is made of western cedar. what do you think, and wait there is more! Life at the Yurt. Living in a yurt while we build our house. We, Susani and Frank, bought the place in 240 Forestry Road close to the Ashley Forest in December 2013. Surrounded by established trees and a view towards the Southern Ocean and Banks Peninsula make this a special place. In the west about 150 English Oaks were planted some 60 years ago, the North is protected by a range of Douglas Firs, a strand of natives including Red Beech, Rimu and Totaras, while the East sees some massive Macrocarpas.

We started on Sunday night putting the center line of flooring down. We had the A14 protective cloth, the versidrain cells and the pummes all sorted. The pummes came in 8 big sacks of 1 cubic meter each. Jeff our neighbour down the road was on hand to drag them of the truck with his tractor – thank you! It was clear when we decided to sell our old place in Waikuku Beach we wouldn’t get something to rent. 2 dogs and a cat were not an advantage in the tight Canterbury market. To be fair, we weren’t to keen on renting anyway and our search was fairly limited – unsuccessful nevertheless! Then Susani told me about the Yurt. I was not impressed. Living in a tent? Working hard in the garden: planting the food forest, planing the green house and digging a water retention pond. Thanks to max, our son, he is fantastic with these machines, a pleasure to watch!
