Exceptional Students in the Classroom

I'm an Intervention Specialist in a suburban public middle school for students with severe/multiple disabilities as well as medical needs. I've just started my fourth year teaching, and each year I am making changes and improving my classroom and my teaching. I plan to use this blog to help me organize my lesson plans and ideas, share ideas with others, and meet other individuals in this field who know what this crazy job is like!

Exceptional Students in the Classroom: September 2009

http://exceptionalstudentsintheclassroom.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Wednesday, September 30, 2009. My smartboard is on my main wall, so this board is adjacent to it. I usually have our topic and cooking activity posted for the week, as well as a book sitting on the board that relates to the topic and a switch recorded with the book on it (that day it was in use when I took the picture). My math students fill in the calendar info during their class. My bathroom. This is the changing table, and below each student has a fabric drawer that contains their personal care it...

Exceptional Students in the Classroom: iPad/iPod touch apps

http://exceptionalstudentsintheclassroom.blogspot.com/2010/07/ipadipod-touch-apps.html

Friday, July 16, 2010. In May, I was grateful to receive a PTO grant and was able to purchase two iPads for my classroom. They arrived right before school let out, but I had a chance to trial one of them during my summer school and ESY classes. I still have many apps to explore, but here have been some of the favorites over the summer so far:. Shrek Forever After: $2.99. Toy Story Read- Along: FREE (There are Toy Story 2 and 3 books, but those are each $8.99). July 16, 2010 at 3:30 PM. Teaching Learners ...

Exceptional Students in the Classroom: Unique Learning: Transition Level Curriculum

http://exceptionalstudentsintheclassroom.blogspot.com/2010/07/unique-learning-transition-level.html

Tuesday, July 13, 2010. Unique Learning: Transition Level Curriculum. This spring, I started to work on scheduling my classroom and students for the following year, as well as planning out what our day would look like and what types of curriculum we will be using. I really enjoy using the Unique Learning Systems curriculum by the folks at News-2-You, although I can say I am still only using it here and there and definitely not yet to it's full capacity. Exceptional Students in the Classroom: November 2009

http://exceptionalstudentsintheclassroom.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 16, 2009. Friday, November 13, 2009. This program caught my eye for a few reasons:. 1 I've gone to a training by one of the authors a few years ago (Diane Browder), and really liked her viewpoint of standards based instruction for students at a lower level. 2 It teaches advanced concepts that other middle schoolers are learning (geometry, algebra, data analysis). 3 It teaches using story problems with picture support (similar to News-2-You). Thursday, November 5, 2009. More to come soon!

Exceptional Students in the Classroom: October 2009

http://exceptionalstudentsintheclassroom.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 10, 2009. The News-2-You topic for this week is college mascots, which is really fun for my class considering we live in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, home of The Ohio State University and Brutus Buckeye. Here are the activities and plans we have for the week:. As we are big Buckeye fans in my room, we will be reading the book "Hello, Brutus! The company that makes this books has also made other mascot books, so keep an eye out for one about a team near you. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Exceptional Students in the Classroom

Tuesday, August 10, 2010. List 1: The original school supply list for their grade level, with the items they will actually need highlighted on the list (for some students, most of the supplies were highlighted; for other students, only a few supplies). List 2: The supply list I usually use for my students. This is for my kiddos with medical needs who are switch users, so I put the following items instead of traditional pencils, paper, notebooks:. 2- pack of Clorox wipes. 6- rolls of paper towels. In case...
