A Rake's Progress

Monday, 29 December 2008. Mutant tomatoes and everything else. Isn't this a brilliant time of year in the garden? We put in the carrots (shown in jiffy pots in the previous post) in an drip-fed oval where we'd previously had spinach. You can barely see them in the ground so the right hand picture shows the close up. The Jap pumpkin (or Kabocha. To those who wish to steer clear of the slightly racist horticultural terminology employed by Australia and New Zealand) is doing well and will hopefully start st...

A Rake's Progress: The Beginning Of A "Beautiful" Friendship

http://excesscabbage.blogspot.com/2008/12/beginning-of-beautiful-friendship.html

Wednesday, 3 December 2008. The Beginning Of A "Beautiful" Friendship. The bloke and I just moved into a delightful West Preston house with both a front and. Back yard. Having lived in concrete boxes and flats for the past five years, you'd think this would be cause for whooping in the streets. Unfortunately, the previous tenant did everything they could to destroy the garden: concrete "tiles" compacting the dirt! Pruning" the trees with a chainsaw! Tipping paint into the planter boxes! Since then (two w...

A Rake's Progress

http://excesscabbage.blogspot.com/2008/12/imagine-if-you-will-words-best.html

Sunday, 7 December 2008. Imagine if you will, the words "BEST. DAY. EVER." mumbled through a mouth full of free fairy floss. And then imagine the words "BEST. DAY. EVER." mumbled through a mouth full of free fairy floss while standing in the new Coburg Bunnings. And then you begin to get a sense of how awesome the BEST DAY EVER is. SO FAR, SO. BUT LO, WHAT MIRACLE DOTH APPEARETH BEFORE OUR VERY EYES! A brand new Bunnings. And bought the seedlings, seeds, peat pots, etc. So arriving home in a post ret...

A Rake's Progress: big plans

http://excesscabbage.blogspot.com/2007/09/big-plans.html

Tuesday, 4 September 2007. Big plans are afoot for the summer garden. A new outdoor dining setting and a string of glorious early spring days was enough impetus to get the pen and paper out, followed by some extra work with Illustrator. The concentric circles radiate out from the Hills Hoist so I can mark the beds out pretty easily with a stick on a string. The stuff under the clothes line has to be reasonably low growing so clothes don't flap all over the plants to the detriment of both.

A Rake's Progress: garden update

http://excesscabbage.blogspot.com/2008/01/garden-update.html

Friday, 18 January 2008. A long while between updates I know, but I picked these little beauties this morning from one of my 4 delightfully fruity tomato bushes and couldn't not share them with you. The variety is Mighty Red, which has proven to be the early fruiter out of the four. The others are Apollo 3, Grosse Lisse and Roma (green fruit pictured in abundance, below). So here's the garden overview. The big garden plans. Seats 10 - 12! We parked it under the fig tree. So you look up and see this.

September 28, 2009. Filed under: cafes and pubs. 8212; Kath @ 1:03 pm. Absolutely beautiful achy bittersweet storybook. 3 Comments ». Hello Girl, long time since last post. A really crazy year. Had to respond to Tinpan Orange. Missed the launch but have the album. Which is good except for the two songs sung by the male (forgotten his name). I don’t think he can write lyrics or words and he certainly can’t sing. Otherwise I bet he’s a really nice guy🙂. 8212; October 19, 2009 @ 12:44 pm. POLL on pubs and ...

March 24, 2010. Practising what we preach. 8212; Kath @ 3:02 pm. I’m conflicted about vege2go. And when the vege2go folk preach good nutrition, perhaps they might reconsider zapping their food in the microwave. Several studies. Show significant nutrient loss from food subject to microwaving. And perhaps they should reconsider selling the coloured lolly-water posing as health tonic. Perhaps vege2go just has more mainstream appeal, which is good. Different strokes, I suppose. 12 Comments ». The fact is tha...

April 29, 2009. Thrift and the single foodie. 8212; Kath @ 6:54 pm. The Avenue has been blessed with a gorgeous little squdgey 3-month-old lassie who’s keeping me sleepless, lactating and honest. (But criminally neglectful of my poor chickens.) Having split with The Father Formerly Known As Bloke On The Av, I’m venturing into the dark depths of single parenthood (though TFFKABOTA still visits daily). I’m looking for thrifty ways with produce. Here are a few of my own:. I HATE the seedless variety of wate...
