Excitron is opgericht in 1999 als gevolg van een vraag uit de paardensport voor ontwikkeling van een aftelklok. Al vlug was er ook vraag voor een timer voor diezelfde paardensport. Deze ontwikkeling gebeurde in samenwerking met SARO. Het is de voorloper van een thyristor. Blijkbaar werden deze buizen o.a. gebruikt in elektrische locomotieven (WAG-1). Ook staat excitron voor de ' excit. Ing world of elec tron. Ics' wat elektronica tenslotte ook is.
