Exploring India

Wednesday, March 23, 2011. Last Day in Delhi. We awoke to lots of excitement in Santineketan as it wasthe Hindu celebration of Holi, the beginning of spring. This is the day when you see people covered in colorful dye from head to toe. Three hours in the car, two hours inthe airport, two hour flight. Then seven hours in Delhi. Holi in the Delhi Airport. Mostly though at this point we were just so incredibly thankful to have met new friends and mentors in Shantum and Chandana. They not only planned a ...

Exploring India: Dehradun to Bombay

http://exetergoestoindia.blogspot.com/2011/03/dehradun-to-bombay.html

Friday, March 11, 2011. I hope I find a good way to upload photos (I can't on this computer) so I can show this place. No more words can describe it. Back in the car we zipped past monkeys along the sides of the road and breakfasted at Gita's parents house. Once again, it felt so wonderful to be invited into the home of a family, have a meal together, and debrief a little with them about our previous days. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Exploring India: Agra and Delhi

http://exetergoestoindia.blogspot.com/2011/03/agra-and-delhi.html

Thursday, March 17, 2011. Varum, our guide, ordered us to never say a word to the vendors and hawkers they did seem to swarm us every moment we left the car. This day was a great immersion in Mughal era history for us. The Taj is the famous mausoleum, but there is also an incredible palace a ways outside Agra where the Mughal emperor kept 5000 women in his harem. There is also a fort right in Agra with a mote, a second dry mote for tigers (happily not there any longer! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Exploring India: Arrived in Delhi

http://exetergoestoindia.blogspot.com/2011/03/arrived-in-delhi.html

Saturday, March 5, 2011. Just a quick update. It's midnight Saturday here and we have just arrived at our hotel in Delhi. The flight was totally smooth (13 hours from Newark), the car ride from the airport (45 minutes) was more of a nail-biter. Something I guess we'll have to get used to. We are staying at the Eros Hotel. It has only been open a couple months and is very nice. We feel like we might be the only people staying here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Exploring India: Calcutta

http://exetergoestoindia.blogspot.com/2011/03/calcutta.html

Friday, March 18, 2011. Without a doubt the best part of Calcutta has been meeting our guide, Chandana! It has been wonderful to travel with a woman after having only male guides until now. Chandana is amazing with Bengali history (Calcutta is in the state of West Bengal) and she also works directly in the field on development issues. Famous coffee house for intellectuals. We had coffee and fried fish. Victoria Memorial - fabuolous museum of British Imperial India. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
