Expanding Horizons...: December 2013

http://www.expandinghurizons.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

See Our Lives as Humans. Tuesday, December 3, 2013. Mail Order Brides were once very popular in the West. For men who lived alone, days away from a town that might have only one or two single women in residence, it was perhaps the only option to finding a wife. For a small fee, they could post an advertisement in Eastern newspapers that would list their requirements and offer passage to those who responded. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). See Our Lives as Humans. Monday, March 25, 2013. Is the line used by Maximus in Gladiator. He said it in order to mock the crowd and the emperor because he had survived when they wanted him dead. What ended up happening was that the crowd loved his audacity and he became a mob favorite. Mosaic on the ruins of a school. Often, as in Gladiator. Expanding Horizons...: August 2013

See Our Lives as Humans. Monday, August 12, 2013. Many people have the fear of being buried alive, called taphophobia. Sadly, it is based an a possible event. In the past, methods of determining death were unreliable. Often, someone would be believed dead because of a shallow pulse and state of comatose. They would be buried while still living, and the mistake only discovered after it was too late. To read of some examples, see this website. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). See Our Lives as Humans. Monday, February 25, 2013. Wielded Weaponry- Part 1. I decided to take a break in the series What is That on Your Head? This week as I really busy and part 3 needs some research still. That being said, I have started a knew series based on a Bible study consensus. It apparently comes as a surprise to many people that I am interested in weaponry. I am not sure why this is but assume it has to do with my lack of a bloodthirsty demeanor. Made from a strap of leather or woven twine, ...

Expanding Horizons...: July 2013

See Our Lives as Humans. Tuesday, July 30, 2013. High Heels in the 1700s. Most people think of high heels as exclusively female. Men are ridiculed if they attempt to wear them. Yet, oddly enough, high heels were a part of men's fashion long before women's. Heels for men were popular in the 1700s through out Europe. Paintings from the period show men with heels much higher than that of the women (though with the amount of skirts the women wore, I would not have wanted heels either). Zoom of Louis XIV heels.

Backing Books: August 2015

Backing Books Worth Reading. Monday, August 24, 2015. Through Waters Deep- Sarah Sundin. Was an amazing story. Maybe it was just my love for Jim and Mary as a couple or the honesty of the historical context, but I really enjoyed this book and stayed up late one night so I could finish it in two days. I would give the story a full five stars, however, there were moments when the Nancy Drew aspects of the story came about as rather cheesy. If not for this, I believe that I would have give this the full...

The writing of this book is well done and captures the historical voice well, with each characters nationality reflected in their syntax and word choice. Backing Books Worth Reading. Friday, July 24, 2015. Jordan Update 6- Final Thoughts on the Dig. The dig season is almost over. In fact, we have completed excavations and only have a week of sightseeing left before we return to the states. I have some mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I am more than ready to sleep in my own bed, to see my friends and family. On the other, I will miss the culture of Jordan and the people I have met. July 24, 2015 at 1:12 PM.
