Expanding the Proscenium

Death, Rebirth, and the skeptic (metaphorically speaking). I've got a full blown case of Halloweenitis now. Damn, but I love this time of year. Mostly, I love the symbolism of this time of year, and of the whole holiday, especially in its pagan roots. Death! A time of transition, of liminality. In-betweenness. Which, really, for humans can be scary stuff. We like things nice and settled, mostly. Only life doesn't quite work that way, does it? The Last Temptation of Christ: thoughts on Blasphemy Day.

Expanding the Proscenium: There's something lurking behind that word

http://expandingtheproscenium.blogspot.com/2009/09/theres-something-lurking-behind-that.html

There's something lurking behind that word. Greta Christina has a nice piece up, " Atheism and Self-Definition. Which got me thinking about words and definitions and battles over same. She's talking about something every atheist has probably experienced - having the word defined for us, despite our protestations to the contrary. Mostly, I find myself fascinated by how words can have so much lurking behind. Not a positive declaration that there is no God. There's Philosophical and Practical Naturalism.

Expanding the Proscenium: It's a Mystery

http://expandingtheproscenium.blogspot.com/2009/09/its-mystery.html

Life, that is. Being. Existence. I'm rereading Andre Comté-Sponville's The Little Book of Atheist Spirituality. There's so much in that little book, it's going to take a few careful readings, I think, to fully engage with it. Which, really, is a wonderful thing. I don't go all the way with this guy's thinking, but I'm finding it challenging and inspiring. When he lays out his reasons that he doesn't believe in God. This is the meaning of your life. Etc, etc, etc. That is, why Being itself? Comté-Sponvill...

Skepticism and Freethought as a Lifestyle. Here's the thing I always have to remind myself of: this freethinking thing, this rationalism and skepticism, it isn't a hat to put on and take off as I like. It doesn't work like that. We see it all the time. Think of your Francis Collins. N the atheist, skeptical and scientific blogospheres since his nomination for the NIH. Really, only without the bloody murders. One moment he is Mr. Science, and the next he is Mr. Evangelical. Is this what I really want?

160;    She insists that she is too stupid to learn this complicated technology. I argued against this. I was adamant that learning something like this phone was more a matter of want rather than mental capacity. She continues to insist she is too dumb. I stand by my theory, that learning is more a matter of opening your mind and having a desire to learn. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. 8211; I almost forgot to mention, Bedford Square 5. Is now available to order! I should be getting my author’s copy in the mail sometime soon, plus I ordered a couple extra copies because I’m simply a g00b like that. Oh, and guess who’s the first author to start the book… THIS GAL! Well, at least I was when they sent us a copy that was on the way to the printers. I will be totally. Bummed if I have to take this statement back, lol! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. One Year of Opus.

Community | in the beansai

https://beansai.wordpress.com/2011/12/14/community

These days, not only am I itching for a writing community, but also for a photog community. You know what? So here I am, back on old hunting grounds, which makes me feel rather regressive. When I took photos of my coworker/friend’s daughter all of that shyness fell away, because I had a task to focus on. With nothing specific to work towards, I tend to lock myself down with self-consciousness. Which brings me on to my next bit. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. One Year of Opus.

160;    First off, check out my photo-post on PhotoBean: Shoot me, shoot you. I did my first semi-official photo-shoot yesterday. I’m happy with the results and how the job went in general. Secondly, I HAVE AN IPHONE 4s OMFG! Oh the drama that surrounded this. So, because I decided to family-plan-up with my parents, my phone had to be sent down to Phoenix, over 2 hrs from where I’m living now. But hey, to save monthly, no biggy! 160;    Hah! Apple Store on a launch weekend is horrendous! Fill in your det...

It was only… | in the beansai

https://beansai.wordpress.com/2014/03/04/it-was-only

It was only…. 8230;a two year hiatus. That’s not bad, right? Okay, so it was really a touch over two years, but close enough! Can you say cabin fever? If I was not a self-proclaimed-pro at zoning at, I would have gone off the deep end. Without a doubt. In the last year or two I have been trying. Eh It was pretty much always a conscious choice. But eventually reality set in that I was not going to manage my original plans. There were other factors as well, but money was the biggest hindrance. Well, I thin...

Recently, I lectured at the University of Michigan Sexpertise. We’ve all read and heard about the importance of gaining clearly stated verbal consent. From partners before sex acts. Driven by Words: 8 Ways to Build a Strong Blended Learning Culture. May 15, 2014.
