A gentleman explorer's blog. Journal: Puerto Rico–The Southern Coast. One thing Puerto Rico is known for is its bioluminescent bays, a rare type of ecosystem that only exists in around 15 places worldwide. Puerto Rico has three of them. However, due to concerns about protecting such fragile ecosystems, there is only one you can swim in. This we did, one moonless early evening. A gentleman explorer's blog. Journal: Granada and Leon, Nicaragua. The architecture is sheer pleasure including some beautiful old churches, most of which are usually closed. The old convent in town, is open, however, and houses an interesting collection of ancient and modern local art. A gentleman explorer's blog. Journal: Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. As they are further off the tourist trail, San Juan offers something those places don’t, which is street after street of preserved colonial architecture. From the fort one can look down upon the beautiful graveyard of Santa Marina Magdelena de Pazzis. There, against a backdrop of azure waters, incredible funerary sculptures lend a peaceful, yet somber air to the place in which graves are squeezed up against graves. March 25, 2015 at 2:53 am.
