On the Road in Michigan: The Stump Man

http://exploringmichigan.blogspot.com/2014/10/the-stump-man.html

On the Road in Michigan. I travel the rocky shores of Lake Superior and the gritty streets of Detroit taking pictures and researching travel guides. - Jeff Counts. Sunday, October 12, 2014. A stump resists the force of the Fox River. During the peak of the lumbering era in the 19. Century the nearby town of Seney where the mills and railroad were located was a town of about 3,000, but that has dwindled to about 300 these days. It’s hard to imagine that the motley collection of motels, gas stati...The Fox...

On the Road in Michigan. I travel the rocky shores of Lake Superior and the gritty streets of Detroit taking pictures and researching travel guides. - Jeff Counts. Friday, June 14, 2013. Legs Inn on Father's Day. In Michigan, if it's Mother's Day it's Frankenmuth. But what about poor old dad? The Legs Inn at Cross Village in northwestern Michigan is just the antidote for fried chicken. Thursday, June 13, 2013. I spent an hour or so cleaning it up for the trade-in, mostly pulling out flies that had become...

Walks With Jack: Relax, it's just a blizzard.

http://walksjack.blogspot.com/2014/02/relax-its-just-blizzard.html

A novice dog owner's tribulations. Friday, February 21, 2014. Relax, it's just a blizzard. Jack's inconvenient resting place at the base of my office chair. Eagle River beach on Lake Superior.frozen solid as far as the eye can see. Winter on the Keweenaw Peninsula. And when the blizzard does finally pass, your favorite beach—now an expanse of snow and frozen waves—will be ready for another visit. And the deer herd wintering by the lake is soooo interesting it more than makes up for the co...All 4 Jack st...

Walks With Jack: Jack takes on the "Cone of Shame"

http://walksjack.blogspot.com/2012/05/jack-takes-on-cone-of-shame.html

A novice dog owner's tribulations. Monday, May 7, 2012. Jack takes on the "Cone of Shame". You can see it in his eyes.I don't think I'm his favorite person today. This seemed like a good idea at the time, but the "Cone of Shame". Clearly is not going to be the master of Jack. It took him about 30 seconds after this photo was shot to pull the thing off his head. And so Jack maintains his Alpha standing, even with a sore back paw. Next up, a sock with a rubber band. Yeah, that outta work. Buy your copy now!

Walks With Jack: The Big Lake in May

http://walksjack.blogspot.com/2012/06/big-lake-in-may.html

A novice dog owner's tribulations. Thursday, June 21, 2012. The Big Lake in May. Recently, my daughter and I drove Jack for a walk on one of the sloping, rocky-slab beaches. On the south side of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It's a completely different beach experience than Jack's usual jaunts on the opposite side of the peninsula at Eagle River. Jack's different reactions to the sloping plates of rock instead of the sandy beach got me thinking about the next Adventures in the U.P. Michigan stories for children.

Walks With Jack: Make Yourself Comfortable

http://walksjack.blogspot.com/2013/09/make-yourself-comfortable.html

A novice dog owner's tribulations. Thursday, September 19, 2013. It's no use trying to write early in the morning if you're sitting on the same couch as a large sleepy dog. This morning I rose just before the sun was fully risen, made my coffee, sat down on the couch (notebook on lap) before anyone else in the house was up—ready for inspiration to strike. My favorite time to write. Also, Jack's favorite time to stretch out and make himself comfortable on the couch. Labels: dogs and couches. Nostaligia, a...

Walks With Jack: Finally, Spring (sort of)

http://walksjack.blogspot.com/2015/04/finally-spring-sort-of.html

A novice dog owner's tribulations. Sunday, April 19, 2015. Finally, Spring (sort of). Jack perusing the still frozen pond on one of our favorite walking sites. No sign of turtles yet. Last week, Jack and I walked the snowy trail that leads to Queen Annie Falls but didn't make it past the pond. The snow had been compacted and melted enough that Jack only occasionally sank in up to his belly and I could get away with simple hiking books as long as I chose my path carefully. Spring in the U.P. KIND News The...

Walks With Jack: The Wisdom of Hound Dogs

http://walksjack.blogspot.com/2009/05/wisdom-of-hound-dogs.html

A novice dog owner's tribulations. Thursday, May 14, 2009. The Wisdom of Hound Dogs. That's the one thing you can never forget when walking a hound dog. Not only does everything smell good, everything smells irresistible, mysterious, compelling and any other adjective you can think of that would require a noble hound to veer off course and take you with him. Since Jack lives by his nose. Learning to heel pretty well, though, and have hope that Jack will soon figure it out from my example. Nostaligia, and...

Walks With Jack: Sweet Slumber

http://walksjack.blogspot.com/2013/10/sweet-slumber.html

A novice dog owner's tribulations. Friday, October 4, 2013. Eloise and Jack in training for their "long winters nap.". Any animal, no matter how undisciplined, seems positively saintly when they're asleep. These two are no exception. Shortly before taking this picture I had to rescue Jack's backside from Eloise (who was laying in wait to swat his tail if he tried to move past her). Laura Smyth, Publisher and Creative Director. Walks With Jack: Love a Dog and Everything Gets Better

http://walksjack.blogspot.com/2015/04/love-dog-and-everything-gets-better.html

A novice dog owner's tribulations. Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Love a Dog and Everything Gets Better. An old friend passed away yesterday after a long struggle with cancer. She was a dog lover (and animal lover generally), but dogs were really special to her. I think it is impossible to overstate what loving an animal means to a person like my friend, Mary. That particular connection of one soul to another with no need for words makes life a little less solitary. Laura Smyth, Publisher and Creative Director.

Thoughts on plot by famous writers - Matador Network

http://matadornetwork.com/notebook/thoughts-on-plot-by-famous-writers

Thoughts on plot by famous writers. October 10, 2009. Notable writers on plot structure, plot development, and the plot of our lives. A story to me means a plot where there is some surprise. Because that is how life is-full of surprises. A plot is nothing but a normal human situation that keeps arising again and again….normal human emotions—envy, ambition, rivalry, love. Hate, greed, and so on. Plot-driven commercial fiction needs to have large stakes, something that’s a threat to the lead character.
