Monday, April 26, 2010. Clinical Genetics Institute celebrates its 5th birthday with an open house on May 3rd. Perspective from a medical geneticist. Hard to believe it’s been over 5 years since we opened our doors. I’m not one to rest on accomplishments or spend a lot of time looking backwards, but I think our early childhood has had some significant milestones—not to mention some teething pains! Fantastic Voyage: A journey through my DNA and Personal Genomics: Got Gout?

http://exploringmygenes.blogspot.com/2009/12/got-gout.html

Sunday, December 27, 2009. After returning to work from the Thanksgiving holiday, I was asked by Marc and Janet if my 23andme report contained anything about Gout. Janet said Gout was a topic of conversation while visiting with her family. Sure enough, I found Gout listed in my elevated-risk section of the Research Report. (Remember, the information in the research report section “has not yet gained enough scientific consensus to be included in [23andme’s] clinical report.”. Click to enlarge image. Persp...

Fantastic Voyage: A journey through my DNA and Personal Genomics: The Risk Type I Have For Diabetes

http://exploringmygenes.blogspot.com/2009/09/risk-type-i-have-for-diabetes.html

Monday, September 21, 2009. The Risk Type I Have For Diabetes. From the list of 10 diseases that 23andMe. Reports on, three were listed in the Elevated Risk category. We have already posted on Crohn’s disease. The remaining one is Type I Diabetes. I am lucky that I do not suffer from any of these conditions, but I value the opportunity this experience has given me to learn about them, what my risks might be, what can I do about it, and what should I discuss with my doctor if symptoms arise. When I look a...

In response, the UK–based PHG Foundation. Influences on my decision. My work involves building new computer programs that can help doctors and patients collect, track, understand, and use family health history and genetic/genomic information in patient care. Monday, July 27, 2009. Carrier Status – Do you have your tracking number? About the DeltaF508 Mutation. Clicking on the link for more information about the disease, I learned that one in every 3,000 babies born to parents of European ancestry in the U.S. has CF, making it the second most common inherited disorder. It was also interesting to learn that the incidence is lower in African-Americans (1 in 15,000) and Asian-Americans (1 in 30,000). If not, should it be? The MD Perspective section. 3 It is impo...

Fantastic Voyage: A journey through my DNA and Personal Genomics: Can Men Understand BRCA?

http://exploringmygenes.blogspot.com/2009/10/can-men-understand-brca.html

Monday, October 5, 2009. Can Men Understand BRCA? I was surprised when 23andMe. Added selected BRCA cancer mutations to the Carrier Status list in February of 2009, especially since everybody knows that Myriad Genetics. Holds a controversial patent to the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Because Myriad is a Salt Lake City-based company, we watch them closely. And more importantly, I have a personal story with Myriad BRCA testing and a family member - which I will share at the end of this post. Anything Here for Me?

Minister? Me?

Various musings from a Church of Scotland minster. How I got here. Tuesday, 17 October 2017. When we think of some of the 'greats' of the bible, how often do we wonder that some of those individuals stood in very long shadows of their predecessors? How were things for Joshua, as he took on the mantle of leading God's people after Moses? Swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. But maybe Moses also know it will take strength and determination for Joshu...
