We traveled through the panhandle of Texas last week, covering most of the distance on the old Route 66. There are a lot of miles of the old road in the Lone Star state, although much is just frontage road for Interstate 40. But the small towns, and even the largest city, Amarillo, have the best original sections with roadside businesses and icons well preserved and in many cases, beautifully restored.

There's many miles of Route 66 to drive in New Mexico, including an old pre-1937 alignment that swings north through Santa Fe and south through Los Lunas. We just finished making a trip across half the state and will have pictures in a few weeks. But to wet your interest, here's a old but still operating icon of Route 66, Clines Corner. And was it "Worth Waiting For", as the roadsigns say? Not with their gas priced at $3.99 a gallon.

I'm still working on the Arizona page, but in the mean time here's a brief preview. These are just the highlights; Arizona has many miles of the original pavement including the longest stretch that hasn't fallen to the Interstate system. Yes, you can sleep in a wigwam. But make reservations! It's a small motel and very popular. Seligman, Arizona is with out a doubt the best "fun spot" on Route 66. Have a bite to eat and then spend some time exploring the museum/gift shop next door.

West of St. Louis at Stanton is a stretch of the old Route 66 pavement that is not just a frontage road for the Interstate. Near by are the Meramac Caverns, which are responsible for all those barnside billboards. Jesse James also hung out in these parts, so there are lots of tourist attractions with that theme. But one attraction is accidental but nontheless a delight to tourists. It's this water tower in the town of Bourbon. And no, it's not filled with 100 proof spirits, just plain water. Just accross...

Until I get all the pictures organized here a a couple of samples. Near the eastern end of Route 66 in California is this colorful sign welcoming visitors to Needles.
