Eye on Cairo: June 2006

http://eyeoncairo.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 18, 2006. For months I thought: If I can just get one thing done today, a trip to the store, a workout at the gym, I will have accomplished something. My friend John went further: It takes one day to buy the groceriesand the next day to put them away, he said. It's not that it is so hard to get things done in Cairo. Its just that there is something about the pace, the heat, and the general feeling that nothing is really going anywhere that contributes to the malaise. Posted by Sami @ 1:35 AM.

Eye on Cairo: 27 Days and a cat

http://eyeoncairo.blogspot.com/2007/01/27-days-and-cat.html

Tuesday, January 16, 2007. 27 Days and a cat. With 27 days to go here in Cairo, I thought I would begin to share some of the information I've gathered all these months here. Some of it will be practical, others will be thoughts, rants and opinions. I appreciate your feedback on any of it. OK, lets start with the practical. WHY YOU MIGHT WANT TO ADOPT AN EGYPTIAN CAT. It makes you wonder: where does the American cat stock come from anyway? The few cats that made it to America on merchant ships? Cats flyin...

Eye on Cairo: Some thoughts about morality

http://eyeoncairo.blogspot.com/2007/02/some-thoughts-about-morality.html

Tuesday, February 06, 2007. Some thoughts about morality. What does it mean to say about someone, you know, before you found Islam, you weren’t a very good person. But now, that you follow these rules, and believe in God, your behavior has improved. You treat other people bettermore like people. What do you do with such a person, such a society? Here, there is an entire moral system just waiting for you, all you have to do is sign on! The stakes become very high, and the definition of what the proper pat...

Eye on Cairo: Mubarak Rally, Sept. 2005

http://eyeoncairo.blogspot.com/2007/11/mubarak-rally-sept-2005.html

Wednesday, November 07, 2007. Mubarak Rally, Sept. 2005. We sacrifice for you. We sacrifice for you, Oh Mubarak! Catchy, isn’t it? There were a bewildering array of security forces. Police in white uniforms, decorated officers in formal attire, security men in black bulletproof vests and in riot helmets, camouflaged-swathed army and Republican Guard types, suited undercover security forces. Thousands of men, arrayed in rows, most looking no older than 19. Posted by Sami @ 11:15 AM. 27 Days and a cat.

City of the Living: June 2006

http://matt-in-cairo.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. June 05, 2006. It's not a dry heat (or is it? Posted by Matt @ 10:12 PM. June 04, 2006. I am back in Cairo after another whirlwind trip away. I first spent four days visiting friends in Oxford and participating in their formal (and "solemn") graduation ceremony; then I returned to the U.S., where I attended my brother's wonderful wedding weekend. What a fun, beautiful, and heady few days that was. Posted by Matt @ 6:27 PM. View my complete profile.

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. October 28, 2005. The Pyramids (with photos! Last Friday at a Fulbright party, I met one of last year's scholars, who is an Egyptologist working on her PhD dissertation. Over drinks and sheesha, she offered to take a bunch of us out to the pyramids for a special personal tour. So we got up really early, loaded up on coffee, and went out. This photo above is our wonderful guide, Jackie. And here is the group:. Posted by Matt @ 7:57 PM. October 25, 2005.

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. September 27, 2005. Lars and I have settled on a flat. I think it's a great deal: we live in the center of Doqqi, on the 10th floor of a nice, clean building; we have two sizable bedrooms, a brand new kitchen, an extremely large, open living/dining room (with a few different areas for sitting and shmoozing); a working fireplace (? I have a small screened-in balcony off my bedroom. We have a washer and good a/c and satellite TV. I'm a bit too exhausted t...

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. November 30, 2005. We're actually having an unseasonal heat/humidity wave here in Cairo. It's pretty sticky out there. And the pollution is terrible. I'm glad I got a little bit of Northeast US winter crispness whilst back home. Posted by Matt @ 4:42 PM. November 18, 2005. http://matt-in-cairo.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_archive.html

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. December 31, 2005. I just returned last night from a wonderful week-long vacation in Israel. More thoughts on this trip, as well as photos, will be posted shortly. Suffice it to say that my return to Israel, after 11 years, was wonderful and interesting and thought-provoking in many ways. Within 12 hours of my return to Cairo, I got a surprising phone-call: an offer to record a song in a studio for Egyptian pop-star Heba Mokhtar. December 19, 2005.

City of the Living. Your guide to my life in Cairo. February 11, 2006. Pandemonium; Cab rides. Egypt won the African Cup of Nations tonight by a score of 2-1 over Cote d'Ivoire. The game was, from what I can tell (I admittedly don't know much about soccer), fairly boring, and not particularly well played. Egypt has a habit of just lobbing the ball into the other team's zone, hoping for some mistake to be made by the other team, instead of controlling the ball and setting up plays. February 07, 2006.

Now, what you may not be able to tell from this photo is that all of the waiter's buttons (I mean, every single one) was either of Britney Spears or Jennifer Aniston. I loved this. What a perfect postmodern statement, in light of Jennifer Aniston's character in "Office Space." He was a really nice guy. The Fridays fare was great. We started off with chicken nachos and mozzarella sticks. Delicious! I enjoyed a pretty good burger. Then they ...

This is what happened this night. And if they do catch you? I don't know what was said or what happened, and I don't know what was said.but the syndicate guys left, we didn't pay a pound, and we were able to carry on playing. Go figure.
