My Matlab experiment code for infant studies is now on Github - Brock Ferguson
http://www.brockferguson.com/blog/my_matlab_experiment_code_for_infant_studies_is_now_on_github
June 18, 2013. My Matlab experiment code for infant studies is now on Github. I have placed the source code for two Matlab projects online. These projects are both Matlab scripts that are built to run looking time experiments with infants, and they are both something I use in my research every day. The Infant Controlled Categorization (ICC). The Object Representation and Tracking (ORT). Baseline, Spatiotemporal Violation, Surface Feature violation, and Feature Binding violation.

The Maple Leafs' inability to win on the road means we should have seen this collapse coming - Brock Ferguson

March 29, 2014. The Maple Leafs' inability to win on the road means we should have seen this collapse coming. The Toronto Maple Leafs. Dropped their seventh game in a row tonight, dropping them further out of a playoff spot and putting Phil Kessel’s incredible season at risk of ending too early. Who could have seen such a collapse? Prior to this losing streak, the Leafs looked to be in good shape — not entirely dominant, but on pace for a berth into the playoffs. Nope I took a quick look at two other tea...

Why is neuroscience so effective in causing people to question the roots of human behaviour? - Brock Ferguson
http://www.brockferguson.com/blog/why_is_neuroscience_so_effective_in_causing_people_to_question_the_roots_of_human_behaviour
June 30, 2013. Why is neuroscience so effective in causing people to question the roots of human behaviour? There are two winds blowing through neuroscience and psychology right now. The first is carrying loads of research funding. Field that has failed to do much. If anything, for our knowledge if cognition and consciousness. But, most psychologists add, it is not the last word in cognitive science, and its discoveries often confirm things we already knew from other measures. One that counts small sets ...

Are abstract rule learning tasks with infants relevant to language development? - Brock Ferguson
http://www.brockferguson.com/blog/abstract-rule-learning-tasks-infants-language
March 23, 2015. Are abstract rule learning tasks with infants relevant to language development? In his role as discussant, Michael Frank. Began by questioning these assumptions, rhetorically challenging us as researchers in this area to explain how these learning phenomena in the laboratory relate to real-world language acquisition. And later, during the question and answer period, Dan Swingley. Do we study infants’ rule learning to understand generalization outside of language? One possibility is that i...

Why do most Finnish babies sleep in a cardboard box? - Brock Ferguson
http://www.brockferguson.com/blog/why_do_most_finnish_babies_sleep_in_a_cardboard_box
June 4, 2013. Why do most Finnish babies sleep in a cardboard box? For 75 years, Finlands expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. Its like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the worlds lowest infant mortality rates. The BBC discusses Finlands longstanding gift to new mother. And its role in reducing infant mortality rates. I love the idea of the box, but a quick look at other countries mortality rates.

Don't develop iPad apps for experiments - Brock Ferguson
http://www.brockferguson.com/blog/dont_develop_ipad_apps_for_experiments
September 2, 2013. Don't develop iPad apps for experiments. Today, I browsed through a brief overview of one online experimental setup used my Michael Frank and colleagues. They give toddlers an iPad in Kiosk mode to play various games scripted in JavaScript (with jQuery) and HTML with a simple PHP backend to save the data. First, developing iPad apps is costly and, with limited funds to execute limitless research ideas, reducing extraneous costs should be a top priority. Use JavaScript to employ timing ...

June 29, 2013. Lots of details are up in the air about where Edward Snowden is, how he might come to justice, etc. But if this recent profile of previous NSA whistleblower Thomas A. Drake is any indication, Snowden should be gravely concerned. He may be forced to. become an Apple Genius.

Infants using verbs to learn nouns in Scientific American - Brock Ferguson
http://www.brockferguson.com/blog/infants_using_verbs_to_learn_nouns_in_scientific_american
March 26, 2014. Infants using verbs to learn nouns in Scientific American. Christie Nicholson reports our finding that infants can use the verbs they know to hone in on the meaning of a novel noun in Scientific American. Its been really exciting to see peoples response to this work, and I hope it joins other recent work in encouraging parents to speak more with (and around) their infants.
