The New Elgin Hotel. The Far End of Town. Most people spend a day or two in Darjeeling on their way to somewhere else. Leela and I stayed for 10 days, which gave us a chance to explore. The heyday of Darjeeling may have been in the 1930s, but we loved it and could easily live there. Although it may be in the Himalayan foothills, it rarely drops below freezing, which makes it not much colder than Hong Kong, where we live. On your tour, click on pictures for larger pictures. The Ghoom Guardian above may have been my first chicken but this Darjeeling hen benefits from her surroundings. The old wood chest in the background, the weathered wall, the T-shirt on the line and the colorful fabric underfoot all help turn her into a paintingt. Even rarer than great museum art is great municipal art. The Guillemard Reservoir, also known as the Penang Reservoir, is one of the loveliest examples I've seen. It's simple and striking, beautifully white and pristine and sits atop a hill overlooking Penang and the sea. This is one of the two pumping stations (seen below), overlooked by a command post of similar design. This is my Mediterranean shot. And from the other direction, both pumping stations.
