a facetious guide to Germany

Tuesday, November 15, 2016. The 4 best things about Frankfurt. Frankfurt is a proud home of apfelwein. Where most of Germany is enamored with beer, Frankfurt went its own way on this front. We first tried a taste of it at a café, just to consider it. It was something like an uncarbonated cider. When I say cider, I mean like the proper alcoholic drinks of Europe, not the hot apple tea of the United States. In Frankfurt, the apfelwein. Is also commonly served as “ ebbelwoi. We found the Kononesteppel.

a facetious guide to Germany: the Castle and the old town festival of Nuremberg

http://facetiousgermany.blogspot.com/2015/12/the-castle-and-old-town-festival-of.html

Tuesday, December 15, 2015. The Castle and the old town festival of Nuremberg. The Castle from Am Olberg street. From the last blog, we went around Nuremberg from the trainstation to the Tiergartentor, one of the prettiest and oldest-feeling squares in all of Nuremberg, with its tall stone tower, it's stone tunnel of a gate, and its medieval cottage style buildings crammed together. When I was there with my parents, we went to my favorite spot for coffee and strudel: Kuchlbauer's Gastehaus. Fine, ja, ja.

a facetious guide to Germany: a longing and south Germany

http://facetiousgermany.blogspot.com/2016/05/a-longing-and-south-germany.html

Tuesday, May 10, 2016. A longing and south Germany. The canal of Nordlingen. It was time to get out of the house again and this time – out of the country! The main town gates. As a dedication to the heroes of Germany, starting with a bust of Arminius who defeated the Romans at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. There is also a Franciscan monastery on a nearby hill which was emptied out after being struck by the Bubonic Plague, and so it goes. Looking at one of the gates. The town wall and a tower.

a facetious guide to Germany: ways 18th century high Germans appropriated street culture

http://facetiousgermany.blogspot.com/2016/11/frankurt-mini-new-york-city.html

Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Ways 18th century high Germans appropriated street culture. Frankfurt isn’t only known for its New Yorker qualities—though they also have a Wall Street bull statue, but here, in typical European pessimism, it stands next to a bear statue—but also for its history. They managed to salvage a lot of it from the firestorm of World War II, and that included the birthplace of the great poet and founder of modern German literature, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. a facetious guide to Germany: Frankfurt Buchmesse: a very short guide

http://facetiousgermany.blogspot.com/2016/10/frankfurt-buchmesse-very-short-guide.html

Friday, October 28, 2016. Frankfurt Buchmesse: a very short guide. In one of the German halls. It's also quite appropriate that the world’s largest book fair would be held in a city known for being the birthplace of Goethe. The father of German literature, who spent his early years there until carting off to Weimar when he was brought into the nobility by the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, thus forever becoming “von” Goethe for-von-eva. The above information was revealed. For the American side of the big old pond.

a facetious guide to Czech Republic: to visit a rain shelter

http://facetiousczechrepublic.blogspot.com/2015/07/to-visit-rain-shelter.html

Tuesday, July 7, 2015. To visit a rain shelter. The park at Pruhonice. With my wife urging me to go with her to Pruhonice - a park on the outskirts of Prague - I decided to invite him along to share the adventure. But not everyone wants some adventure, especially when it's raining. To our not real surprise, there was a proper parking lot. When we pulled in there, the weather had made the complete transformation from sunny skies to overcast, cold and pouring. The castle at Pruhonice. And later, our friend...

a facetious guide to Czech Republic: Prospero's fancy

http://facetiousczechrepublic.blogspot.com/2015/06/prosperos-fancy.html

Monday, June 29, 2015. Protection from the bureaucratic rain. In the last blog. I introduced the Prague Quadrennial. And the main Georgian exhibit. The Quadrennial is the Olympics of theatre set design, a showcase held everyone four years for performing artists and designers across the world to celebrate their love and dreams and to show off the hard work that they’ve done. Yesterday I went to Kafka’s House. Had a projector with a scrolling skyline displayed on the wall and invited their guests to draw&#...

a facetious guide to Morocco: March 2015

http://facetiousmorocco.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 30, 2015. The worse the smell, the closer you are. The Rcif square and gate to the medina. We did find one cafe that had great food and an excellent outdoor garden for eating, kind of an oasis in the alleys. It was called the Ruined Garden. A main street in Fez. Drying and dying some leather. A cat helping dry some leather. A loom in a rug shop. Name your price then," the vendor said. We've got a hundred to spare, and I like that one.". Really man, that's all I can do, have a nice day!

a facetious guide to Spain: May 2015

http://facetiousspain.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 4, 2015. The Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. I've traveled all across Europe on a budget, and even when I travel now, I'm still highly budget minded. With every restaurant outing, museum, train ticket or whatever, I'm constantly thinking, "Do we need that? Is there another way? Is this particular experience worth forgoing a future one? Why my weirdness about it? Which actually sounded the most interesting if not the least authentic, a show combining the highlights of both artistic styles in a so...

a facetious guide to Spain: drinking coffee from a paper cup

http://facetiousspain.blogspot.com/2015/04/drinking-coffee-from-paper-cup.html

Monday, January 12, 2015. Drinking coffee from a paper cup. The second day of Barcelona still consisted of our gang of four staying at the hobbit-sized Pension Miami. Whose location was excellent - not premium - decor was charming, and size was miniature, run by friendly and considerate enough employees who dealt with us despite our despairing level of Spanish. A clean restaurant kitchen. The view from the three crosses. On top of the viaduct. A "leaning" Catenary arch below a viaduct. On quick greetings...

a facetious guide to Czech Republic: on the hypercube and not dancing

http://facetiousczechrepublic.blogspot.com/2015/07/on-hypercube-and-not-dancing.html

Monday, July 13, 2015. On the hypercube and not dancing. Not really dancing on the dancer. In addition, there really isn't much dancing going on in clubs in Czech Republic. Mostly it's just full of people looking down at the beers pondering the existence of emptiness and the miserable lightness of being. So when my friend from Georgia said, "Let's go to a club" my mood floundered. What did I know about clubs here anyway? Location: Staroměstská, 110 00 Praha-Praha 1, Czech Republic.

Tuesday, February 10, 2015. Touts, thy days are numbered. View of the medina from our the Hotel Continental. But then I would answer back, why wouldn't I, sounds amazing! Interior of the Hotel Continental. City street in the medina. Le Petit Socco, the main square of the medina. With enough persistence, however, the tout caught my eyes. "Why are you so paranoid, man? With reason, now excuse us.". Location: Tangier, Morocco. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Things to do in Tangier. The choices of travel.

Monday, January 25, 2016. On friends and drunken munkeys. A SoHo street with Freedom Tower doing the photobomb. John's of Times Square, near the Manhattan of Times Square. From there, we met some of my wife’s friends up near Times Square, at an old church converted to a pizzeria. This was the famous John’s of Times Square. 8211; New Yorkers and their creative names! 8220;They don’t take reservations? 8220;You gotta get in line, pal! A street in the Upper East End, west side of Park. The Statue of Liberty.

a facetious guide to France

Sunday, May 29, 2016. Colmar and the end of architecture. Le Grand Rue, Colmar. Colmar’s earliest shout out was by the rock-star minstrel monastic balladeer, Notker the Stammerer, back in the 10th century AD. He was a Benedictine monk musician who frequently went on tours of the Alsatian Wine Route. And wrote some pretty epic tales about Charlemagne. A festival of foreigners. Le Grand Rue and Little Venice. From the Champs de Mars, we headed straight for the Grand Rue. Next we went back up the Rue des Ta...
