Two months later, he had successful surgery to reconstruct his eyelid and to remove the metalwork in his forehead. Kalyani was born in central India with a complex facial cleft which resulted in a defect in the front of her skull, two large ridges on her forehead, a limited nose, and eyes significantly displaced. Her father, though desperately poor, was determined to do his best for her, and took her on a 20-hour train journey to Mumbai in search of a doctor who would help her. He was told she was too young for treatment and that in any case he couldn’t afford it.
