For me, it was the catalyst to increase my involvement. I believe one needs to be on the inside to drive change. That’s my history to joining the political race. I am an Independent candidate in the upcoming local elections, in the Dundrum ward. But, back to today’s topic. The odds are stacked against me:. I am kno...

Geoglyphs' Ramblings: Why Human Rights Matter
http://geoglyphs-ramblings.blogspot.com/2009/12/why-human-rights-matter.html
Ramblings of a curious character. Thursday, December 10, 2009. Why Human Rights Matter. 61 years ago today the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Slightly over three years earlier, the Allies had liberated Europe, including the concentration camps at Auschwitz. Nowadays, it's not unusual to hear someone mocking human rights legislation, perhaps agreeing with Gene Hunt. Many were told their families were dead. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Ramblings of a curious character. Friday, November 27, 2009. The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink. In our age there is no such thing as "keeping out of politics.". George Orwell, Politics and the English language. In yesterdays' publication of the Murphy Report. There is an interesting phrase: mental reservation. In plain En...

http://passlevelpolitics.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Political musings of an interested but non-expert citizen. Thursday, February 14, 2013. Following on from the review of Dáil boundaries last year, a committee has been set up to redraw county and city council wards. They accepted public submissions during January and here is the one I wrote. It wasn't as detailed as I wished as I ended up rushing it in the last couple of days while travelling to and from Brussels. Moving across the river, there are 37 council seats to be allocated. The area is covere...

Political musings of an interested but non-expert citizen. Thursday, July 19, 2012. Ich bin ein Hamburger. This past week I've been in Hamburg attending this year's edition of the Digital Humanities. Which is maybe 2km from the very centre of the city and on a major inbound artery past Dammtor. At no stage during my visit did I ever see a traffic jam, and there have been two very wet mornings which would have seen bumper to bumper back home, even during the school holidays. So would I live here? Maybe, b...

Political musings of an interested but non-expert citizen. Sunday, September 30, 2012. May you live in interesting times. So as one might imagine, the last week has been one of those glued to the coverage week as various storylines were picked up again after the long summer break in the political soap opera that is Ireland. The one bright light of the last week was today's successful pro-choice march through the streets of Dublin. Despite some well known commentators saying there were less than 30(!
