Gentoo Penguins In The Falkland Islands

It is estimated that there are some 300,000 breeding pairs, whose n. Ests are usually made from a circular pile of stones and can be quite large, 20 cm high or as can be seen in these photos by divots in the ground which were being built up with sticks and twigs. If you think this poor fellow looks a little depressed you'd be right!

Gypsy Cove, Stanley, East Falkland. Click on a thumbnail to see larger image. Magellanic Penguins are very shy creatures. The adults wouldn't entertain the camera and hid in their burrows. Except for these chicks. At first there was only one chick have a look at the outside world, so I crept closer and closer until eventually my camera lens was down to 28mm. It is common for two eggs to be laid in a burrow, and in a good year both chicks are reared - so this must have been a good year.
