More than 1,600 people took part in the largest Carlson School alumni gathering of the year Carlson Day at the Races. Held August 20 at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn., this event celebrated its 13th year. Attendees enjoyed exciting races, ate a delicious picnic dinner, and reconnected with old friends while forging new relationships. The young girls file into the classroom one by one, many announcing their arrival with a high-pitched Hi, Ms. Joy. As they gather around the table, Joy McBrien starts handing out an assortment of strings, beads, and colorful faux jewels to the girls. It’s art club at the all-girls Laura Jeffrey Academy in St. Paul, and the students eagerly craft their jewelry under the watchful eye of McBrien, an AmeriCorps promise fellow at the school and a 2011 Carlson School graduate. In the last 12 months, the Carlson Brand Enterprise completed 18 projects, all of which focused on the strategic and analytical components of brand and marketing strategy consulting. Clients included General Mills; 3M; McDonald’s; and CAT Paving, a Brooklyn Park, Minn.-based division of global machinery manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. CAT Paving was equally impressed. Based on the team’s work, the company extended the project to allow the students to assess marketing’s role in new product introductions.
