Border Studies Program Fall 2012: Dia de los Muertos: A Binational Procession

http://fall2012borderstudies.blogspot.com/2012/11/dia-de-los-muertos-bi-national.html

Border Studies Program Fall 2012. Thursday, November 15, 2012. Dia de los Muertos: A Binational Procession. It was here that José Antonio Elena Rodríguez was shot at the age of 16 by an American Border Patrol officer through the slats of the wall, on Mexican territory. The details of what happened are not that clear- officers allege he was throwing rocks. What is clear is that he was shot seven to eight times in the back through one of the four inch gaps in the wall. Submitted by Sophie Gregg.

Border Studies Program Fall 2012. Monday, November 5, 2012. Our host is the Assistant Field Office Director, Martin Zelenka. Mr. Zelenka meets us in a conference room prior to our tour of his facility. On the wall, a screen flashes through a series of video-feeds: men sleeping in bunk beds, men folding sheets, someone being processed, men playing cards, watching TV. No one explains why it is there. A security measure? Insurance against accusations of mistreatment? 22 million people are currently incarcer...

Border Studies Program Fall 2012. Wednesday, October 31, 2012. I left El Paso both in awe and infuriated. I was even more in awe when we got to Big Bend National Park. Did you know that Texas is huge? The park ranger who told us this story said that the day when most people cluster around the fence, having conversations through it with people on the other side, is Mexican Mother’s Day. Border Studies Program Fall 2012. Monday, November 12, 2012. Tohono O’odam Nation- wisdom from our past, solutions for our future. Considering our previous study of the border in other contexts and geopolitical locations and having read a couple of articles about the Nation, it was clear before our visit that one could study interaction between native nations and the border alone for at least a semester. After visiting the farm, we made a short visit to the Nation’s annual Diabetes Fair and were ab...

Border Studies Program Fall 2012. Thursday, October 4, 2012. Imagining Borders Following Watersheds / That’s a Resource in Your Toilet. A watershed is “that area of land, a bounded hydrological system, within which all living things are inextricably linked by their common water course and where, as humans settled, simple logic demanded that they become part of a community.”. 8212; John Wesley Powell. Did you ever consider that we pee into clean drinking water? Submitted by Maddie Taterka. Very nice post&...

Border Studies Program Spring 2013. Monday, April 1, 2013. Our Relationship to the Land. La Florida, Santa Anita, and San Carlampio may have vastly different experiences and visions for the future, but I am still in awe of these three communities' power and strength in owning their own land, dictating their working conditions, living communally, and resisting the power of neoliberalism. Border Studies Program Spring 2013. Monday, April 1, 2013. From the Concrete Jungle to Desert Life. When I first heard that I would spend a semester in the desert I pictured vast open land with a few cacti along with perhaps some tumbleweeds mysteriously blowing through with the wind. Honestly, as a Queens girl, that is all I had seen on TV about the desert. And since staying in Tucson for a couple of weeks I realized that my conception of this desert had been completely wrong. To me, the desert is life.

Border Studies Program Spring 2013. Monday, April 1, 2013. Something I am For. 8220;So often we know exactly what we are against. But how often do we actually know what we are for? A woman named Juanita, who would be one of our guides for the trip, said this to us on our first day in Xela, Guatemala. Even after spending several weeks on the border and learning about border politics in an intimate setting, I still was unable to articulate a complete or passionate defense of what I know that I am for,.

Border Studies Program Spring 2013. Wednesday, February 27, 2013. The Environmental Impact of Border Security. In the first talk, Sergio talked about the environment surrounding the borderlands. We learned that the borderlands are very diverse, with four different climates represented. He showed us pictures of jaguars, ocelots, bobcats, and mountain lions-all found in Arizona! Dan Millis talked about using large predators as an indicator of the health of an ecosystem. If an area is healthy, it will b...

Border Studies Program Spring 2013. Tuesday, April 16, 2013. A Moral or a Human Law? Should There be a Difference? Today, we walked to a human rights organization in downtown Tucson that advocates for border and immigrant communities. Their Policy Director is a Tohono O´odham and activist who advocates that everyone can contribute to ending human suffering on the border. If people know that others are dying in their backyard, they have a moral obligation to prevent these deaths. He called this moral hypo...

Border Studies Program Fall 2012

Border Studies Program Fall 2012. Friday, November 16, 2012. If the people walking around the streets of Tucson right now weren’t bundled up in jackets and close-toed shoes, I’m not sure I would remember that three months had passed since I arrived in August. The Border Studies Program Fall 2012 semester kicked off during the monsoon season here in southern Arizona when daily highs were still upwards of 100 degrees and sunsets were often accompanied by heat lightening. Submitted by Roxanne Rapaport.
