Fantails and Fibrolite: June 2014
http://fantailsandfibrolite.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
A blog about renovation and ruralism. Time for a tidy up. Wednesday, 25 June 2014. We had one of the worst storms on record for forty years a fortnight ago. Amazingly the only damage was to my globe artichoke. It had already grown to giant proportions so it was a bit of a setback for my vegetable patch. Interestingly, the damaged leaves seemed to be even more under attack from aphids (or similar) than when the plant was thriving. I've stripped those leaves off now and hope the plant revives itself. The r...

A blog about renovation and ruralism. Sunday, 21 December 2014. We found these California Quails out for a walk this afternoon with eleven chicks. I'd guess that the chicks were only a few days old and they struggled to get up the last few steps. Eventually I scooped up the last four chicks, one by one, and popped them onto the grass at the top. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

A blog about renovation and ruralism. On the bright side. A plant to call home. Wednesday, 25 February 2015. I found a skink in my watering can today. It wouldn't come out even when I tipped the can over. But it let me scoop it out before it scurried for cover. I was less pleased to find this nest of paper wasps on the rabbit hutch but it was still interesting to watch them laying their eggs. Wednesday, 18 February 2015. On the bright side. The grass is growing and so are the cicadas. A plant to call home.

A blog about renovation and ruralism. Chicken soup for the soul. Friday, 13 September 2013. Sadly one of our pine trees was finished off by last summer's drought and we needed to remove it to prevent falling branches damaging power lines or passing motorists. Friday, 6 September 2013. Thursday, 5 September 2013. Wednesday, 4 September 2013. Chicken soup for the soul. We were lucky enough to have only three roosters from our last clutch of chicks. As he took each bird out of the box, he declared it to be ...

A blog about renovation and ruralism. The Peacocks New Feathers. Fennel and Black Pepper Bread. Thursday, 13 June 2013. Here's our chief peacock delicately preening his emerging tail feathers. Wednesday, 12 June 2013. The Peacock's New Feathers. The neighbour's peafowl have moulted over the last few months. We didn't gather up too many stunning tail feathers but we got quite a lot of nice peahen feathers which went towards making Easter cards. Check back tomorrow for a video of the preening process.

Margaret's Patch: December 2016
http://margaretspatch.blogspot.com/2016_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, 31 December 2016. Looking back on the allotment 2016. This time last year we were busy clearing our daughter Helen's allotment ready for the new tenants to take it on and I remembered the shock of finding a dead chicken in the manure bin! That had come from the plot behind- poor chicken, we don't know how it got there. Now we just have the one plot to look after it has been so much easier. Read about plot 10b here. Most of the fruit has done well, we are still eating the apples which are stored...
Margaret's Patch: August 2016
http://margaretspatch.blogspot.com/2016_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, 21 August 2016. A garden for wildlife. We do quite a lot of garden visiting during the summer, some of them large gardens, others quite small by comparison. I like to visit other peoples' gardens to get ideas for garden design, planting schemes, spotting how well plants grow in different conditions. A few weeks ago Helen and I visited an NGS. Here were fruit bushes and a few salad and vegetable beds amongst the borders which contained many perennial plants and shrubs. This was a garden for wi...

Friday, 17 June 2016. Rebuilding the bug hotel. The first bug hotel we built on the allotment was a bit thrown together. It was done as an activity for the grandchildren when we made the woodland den. A couple of years ago. It was quite untidy, but wildlife like untidy places. However being used as a step by an intruder to climb over the fence from the next door plot hadn't helped with its stability. Foxgloves growing under the sycamore tree. I spent a very pleasant afternoon putting it all together and ...
Margaret's Patch: January 2017
http://margaretspatch.blogspot.com/2017_01_01_archive.html
Monday, 30 January 2017. Through the garden gate in January. There's not a lot you can do in the garden in January and being such a long, dull, dark and dreary month, if you like to be out gardening it can be quite depressing. I like to plant up pots of bulbs as well as having them in the garden borders. So I went off to the garden centre recently and bought little pots of snowdrops and crocus to plant up. They will go on the garden table or potting benches. On Sarah's blog Down by the Sea. When I arrive...

Tuesday, 26 July 2016. At last the leeks are planted. One of my favourite winter vegetables is leeks and I like to grow as many as I can. We've usually had a good lot of leeks to harvest down at the allotment, but last year they didn't do at all well. So I'm determined to do better this year. I łove planting leeks, it's so different from planting other vegetables. Make a planting hole with a dibber, pop the leek plant in then fill the hole up with water. Easy but back breaking!
