A Voice from the Wood: October 2014
http://rosswoodstudlar.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 29, 2014. Thor's Hammer and other Indelible Icons. Bryce Canyon National Park. Not surprisingly, I became fixated on Thor's hammer. And wielded my brushes and brush pens and oil pastels to produce a few drawings. Yes, nature meets culture here for me, being that I thrilled to the adventures of the thunder god (especially Marvel's rendition) in my young days and my older ones. How appropriate that the first Thor comics epic I read was “The Flame, The Frost, and The Fury! Where I worked ...

A Voice from the Wood: Old Faithful from a weary ol' Wood
http://rosswoodstudlar.blogspot.com/2015/07/old-faithful-from-weary-ol-wood.html
Sunday, July 19, 2015. Old Faithful from a weary ol' Wood. It appears that July will not be a big blog month for me, since I am preoccupied to the Nth degree with other projects. First it was my evening program about the artists of Yellowstone, which I titled The Artistic Frontier. In Gardiner, Montana. Now it's a comics story in collaboration with the legendary Stephen Bissette. In the meantime, I'll share a watercolor drawing I made from life of Old Faithful. I felt the collective energy of the cro...

A Voice from the Wood: June 2015
http://rosswoodstudlar.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 8, 2015. Lady Bighorns on the Edge. I thought that they were mountain goats, two adults and two babies. I wondered if they might be a family, not knowing the family structure of these ungulates. From my vantage point, on a higher cliff on the trail up Mt. Washburn ( Yellowstone National Park. Relieved that my animal friends had been vindicated, I ambled back downhill, and found the spot from which I had seen the wily ungulates. On the cliffs below, those bighorn sheep were still around!

A Voice from the Wood: CAVE Exodus, the freeing of a trapped Spider
http://rosswoodstudlar.blogspot.com/2015/04/cave-exodus-freeing-of-trapped-spider.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. CAVE Exodus, the freeing of a trapped Spider. It has been a trying winter at Carlsbad Caverns. We recently had a collective going away party for the last five seasonal rangers to go off to their new parks and new adventures. They asked us each to give an informal exit speech. Reluctantly, after urging from my peers, I stepped to the “podium.” A slightly-edited version of what I said:. There was only one way to find out. Whenever Tales of the Uncanny. From About Comics comes out, ...

A Voice from the Wood: September 2014
http://rosswoodstudlar.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 19, 2014. The Sasquatch, Our Sibling. I have never encountered Bigfoot. My painting is a whimsical experiment with a new set of gouache paints; and the sasquatch. However, the Sasquatch recently gained a very credible witness, which has given me pause, and made me contemplate the possibility of large hominids in the bush. Les Stroud ( Survivorman. Has had two close encounters with Bigfoot. The Survivorman said that he does not know what he encountered, but it was not moose, wolf, or bea...

A Voice from the Wood: Be wary of animals large....
http://rosswoodstudlar.blogspot.com/2015/05/be-wary-of-animals-large.html
Monday, May 18, 2015. Be wary of animals large. I asked my supervisor at Yellowstone Park. Country countless times, but Yellowstone is also home for the larger and less predictable grizzly. As I went, I spoke “Yo whazup bears, I be passin' through.” (They normally walk away. I splashed through some muddy trail to Cascade Lake, my destination. I turned around and headed back. Precautions for bears and sharks are important. However, the deadliest animal in the world is the mosquito, for its spread of d...

A Voice from the Wood: March 2015
http://rosswoodstudlar.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Bear of the Northern Wilds. A vignette from my Yellowstone. Trip (with my parents) last year:. The young bear is probably out shuffling through the woods somewhere today, with pine smell in his nostrils and food on his mind. I don't know the bear's gender, so my male pronouns have a 50% chance of being correct.). Tuesday, March 24, 2015. Big event for this wandering ranger. I never imagined that this would happen. I go to where an artist moved the Earth. I hope that you all come ...

A Voice from the Wood: November 2014
http://rosswoodstudlar.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 13, 2014. In the Footprints of Seldom Seen Smith. Was born in Pennsylvania. At age eighteen, he went on a westward trek, by foot, bicycle, and train-hopping; cross-continent to California, and then east to the southwest. When he landed in the four corners area, he knew he had found home. Sought to emulate the tactics of Abbey's characters. The resultant movement of Earth First! To be clear, there is more than one kind of direct action—the activist can wreck bulldozers with corn s...
