Perhaps the most interesting part of Gordon’s story is how her work ended up becoming a political football in the era of Roe v. Wade. Her experiences there show how difficult it is to do good history in politicized times, where even academics are expected by those of similar opinions to help hide the rough edges of their chosen viewpoint.
