Sub)Urban Girl Does Farming. Sunday, July 23, 2006. Well, I guess farm life has begun to seem more ordinary to me, because I can't believe I haven't written in three weeks. Things have just become so routine that my blog-spark has dimished a bit.but certinaly not for a lack or decrease in enthusiasm about the farm. I'm cooking up ways to come back in the future, and they're starting to get more and more realistic. First on the list: Chicken Processing. Posted by Julia at 6:38 PM. Sunday, July 02, 2006.

Sub)Urban Girl Does Farming. Sunday, July 02, 2006. Weeks 6 and 7. It’s been two weeks since I updated. This week was pretty monotonous, though, so I don’t have too much to add on to what I had started writing from last weekI’ll just post the two weeks together. It might get kind of longfeel free to skip around! Here’s the intro I wrote last week (I still feel the same way! So much happened this week it seems like it went on forever! Monday Workshop: The Organic Movement. Stepping off my soapbox now.

Sub)Urban Girl Does Farming. Sunday, June 18, 2006. Week 5: Pest Week. The War on Bugs. The War on Bugs. Cardboard collars around the plants. Tinfoil wrapped around the stems. Finding and squishing as many cutworms as possible. Going out when it’s dark and squishing them mid-meal (they eat the plants at night). Putting a super fine organic-approved powder made of crushed ancient remains (not making this up) around the plants that supposedly gets into the cutworms’ joints and cuts them. This week was the ...

Sub)Urban Girl Does Farming. Tuesday, June 06, 2006. May 24: Gory.beware. First thing in the morning, we moved the lambs again. They moved without incident. These sheep are very placid last year’s sheep apparently escaped all the time, especially while moving their pens. These guys just get up and go exactly where we ask them to. These be some chill sheep. PICK UP THIS DEAD CHICK WITH MY BARE HANDS. I had to force some restraint on myself or I would have left having filled the bed of the pick-up with crap.

Sub)Urban Girl Does Farming. Tuesday, May 23, 2006. Tuesday, May 23: Bloody Tuesday. Up at 6:30 for chores (I doTuesdays and Thursdays). It was a gory morning. Next I went to check on the lambs. They were placidly chewing. I’ve never seen them when they weren’t. Mercifully, John was very unhappy, and had exactly the reaction I had hoped for. Phew.but notJohn was stressed about losing his animal. And nobody likes to see an adolescent chick get mauled. Cut some brambles that were intruding on a path to the...

Edible, Inedible: October 2007

http://edibleinedible.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 22, 2007. I was on a protein kick for awhile. Those of you who know me will be shocked at what I was eating, and the sad fact that I was inspired by seeing Heidi Klum. Talking about eating egg whites all day long. Anyhow, for a couple of weeks this was my favorite thing to eat:. A sandwich with eggs whites, seared spinach, low fat jalapeño cheese. And a couple of fake sausage. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Sunday, October 21, 2007. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Dry - a couple han...

Edible, Inedible: August 2007

http://edibleinedible.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 30, 2007. I attempted growing a few vegetables in my front yard, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and wax beans. I left these wax beans on the vine too long, and they were mealy, with overly developed seed-bean parts. Last night I had two tomatoes that tasted pretty good, but nothing like Alabama tomatoes from my grandma. Also, there are amazing tomatoes to be had in Ohio. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Wednesday, September 19, 2007. Then we are happy, like this:. Posted by I'm MaryCat. A new discovery was made in Vermont. One grape half green, half red. Interestingly enough, the same effect can be accomplished with two people:. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Tuesday, September 11, 2007. In addition to the apple crisp. I read that a real fritatta is poured in a hot skillet and started on the stove top, then finished in the oven. Maybe I will try this next time. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Posted by I'm MaryCat.

http://edibleinedible.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 28, 2007. Well, I guess these are tarts, not pies. It is a basic pie crust recipe rolled flat, with the filling heaped in the middle, and the crust just folded up around the fruit. One is raspberry-pear, and the other is apple-plum. Yum! Posted by I'm MaryCat. Alert reader Sarah sent in this link. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Saturday, May 19, 2007. Scallion Pancakes, part 1 of 3. Wednesday, July 25, 2007. My friend Marc sent me this story. That I really enjoyed. I think my favorite pickles in the Boston area are the homemade ones at the East Coast Grill. I wish I could eat them every day. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Sunday, July 22, 2007. Was visiting last week, all the way from Oregon. I was craving tempeh, maybe because Katy and I used to live and eat in co-ops. White wine vinegar, chives, s&p. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Sweet potato and stuffed pear. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Edible, Inedible: January 2008

http://edibleinedible.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 20, 2008. I have been eating lots of fish lately, especially salmon. My favorite dinner these past couple of weeks has been pan-seared salmon, pasta with garlic, scallions, and butter, and some sort of vegetable, like seared bok choi or lemon broccoli. Yum! Carla told me she makes her salmon in the toaster oven, for 12 minutes at 325. She lightly oils and seasons both sides. Carla was kind enough to send in a photo:. Posted by I'm MaryCat. Edible, Inedible: kasha varnishkes

http://edibleinedible.blogspot.com/2008/02/kasha-varnishkes.html

Thursday, February 14, 2008. Delicious bowties with buckwheat! I had this dish for the first time a couple of weekends ago. Maybe you were lucky enough to have a Jewish grandma that made kasha varnishkes for you all the time? Not me, so this was my introduction. Literally, it means buckwheat and bowties. I have no idea if this is a traditional recipe or alteration, but it was the closest I could find to recreate what I ate. I used this recipe. A few changes I recommend:. Posted by I'm MaryCat.

Edible, Inedible: Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams

http://edibleinedible.blogspot.com/2008/01/jenis-splendid-ice-creams.html

Wednesday, January 16, 2008. Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. Right after the holidays, I drove from Arizona to Boston. We were on a mission to get to Boston, and it is winter, so we just drove, drove, drove and didn't really make any fun stops on the way. Except for in Ohio. OHIO! We stayed with our friends (and the crazy kitten Mali) on their farm in western Ohio. We each got a trio, three scoops in a bowl with a wedge of waffle cone. I had gravel road, belgian chocolate, an butterscotch with cocoa nibs.

Edible, Inedible: Meat epiphany! Steak and potatoes = delicious

http://edibleinedible.blogspot.com/2007/12/meat-epiphany-steak-and-potatoes.html

Thursday, December 20, 2007. Steak and potatoes = delicious. I know, I know! Steak and potatoes is about the oldest combination ever. But I never really made the connection that it really is the best. Anyhow, I am really more interested in the steak. I bought a piece of sirloin, cut it into two smaller-but-still-huge steaks at home, oiled both sides of the meat, and generously salted and peppered both sides. That's it! Get the pan almost. Sear each side to a nice crusty caramel. Don't smoosh your ste...
