In 1804 Samuel Marsden induced three of his friends from Scotland - one Robert Smith, Lance's ancestor - to come out to Australia to care for his sheep. Robert arrived in 1804, eventually taking up residence west of the Blue Mountains at Trunkey Creek where he owned all of the land between Bathurst and the Abercrombie River.
