The Farthing Layouts: GWR 1854 Saddle Tank (1)
http://farthinglayouts.blogspot.com/2015/07/gwr-1854-saddle-tank-part-1.html
GWR 1854 Saddle Tank (1). I’m building a GWR 1854 class saddle tank in 1900s condition, using a modified and detailed South Eastern Finecast body kit on a Bachmann 8750 chassis. I bought the kit part-assembled, but a bath in hot water dissolved the glue and allowed me to break it down into its main components. The body castings require more work. The locating lugs on the side frames and buffer beams were removed, and about 1 mm was filed off the central section of the footplate and splashers each sid...
The Farthing Layouts: Wagon propulsion
http://farthinglayouts.blogspot.com/2014/08/wagon-propulsion.html
I've been testing the trackplan for “The sidings”, and got a bit carried away! Jokes aside, there is. A more serious side to this: As previously explained. The layout is inspired by the trackplan at the back of Gloucester Old Yard. This included the very short so-called “biscuit siding” which served a private warehouse through a kick-back arrangement. In GWRJ No. 45 (p262), shunter Hayden Jones explains how the biscuit siding was operated:. In any case, my initial reaction was to disregard these practice...
The Farthing Layouts: Traverser testing
http://farthinglayouts.blogspot.com/2014/07/ive-been-testing-my-somewhat-under.html
I’ve been testing my somewhat "under-engineered" traverser, and made this little video to show it in operation. It continues to work well, and I now have some faith in the basic concept. I’m in the process. Of re-enforcing how the tubes are fixed in the foamboard, but that is more of a pre-emptive move than a result of any actual problems so far. The running is smoother than rendered by the video. 8 July 2014 at 00:44. Always nice to read your blog entries. Looks the business to me! 8 July 2014 at 09:43.
The Farthing Layouts: What really happened in the Cuban missile crisis
http://farthinglayouts.blogspot.com/2015/02/what-really-happened-in-cuban-missile_12.html
What really happened in the Cuban missile crisis. Farthing, 1904. With a rising sense of panic, Goods Porter E. Sparkler stared at the pigeon baskets he had just knocked over. A lid had opened, and the pigeons were escaping. The pigeons soon scattered around the goods yard. They were white show pigeons, en route to a prestigious event at the London Philoperisteron Society. One of the pigeons flew into the goods depot. At first it flew aimlessly about. 8230;which fell right into the paperwork…. After a ci...
The Farthing Layouts: LSWR stone wagon
http://farthinglayouts.blogspot.com/2015/05/lswr-stone-wagon.html
This enlargement (apologies for the poor quality) shows the presence of some interesting "foreign” wagons at Farthing, including an MSWJR 3-plank open and an LSWR one-plank stone wagon. I’ve already modelled the former, so I thought I’d do the LSWR wagon as well. So here it is in 4mm scale. I built it using the resin kit from Graham Baker of Gramodels. Below is a description of how it was done. Fortunately the instructions deal with this: Take one bowl of hot water and add the body. I’m not 100% su...

Julias Modelopolis: Reaching for the lasers
http://modelopolis.blogspot.com/2015/06/reaching-for-lasers.html
Sunday, 7 June 2015. Reaching for the lasers. Back from my hols for the time being. I thought it was worthwhile putting anther post together to show you all some of the stuff I have been upto. Firstly on Sunday 31st May I was in Bideford at the North Devon Model Railway Show once again. This time though I took along some of my bits and bobs to show the folk down there. It was a nice little show and the visitors all were nice and friendly. I even made it into the local newspaper there! 7 June 2015 at 20:24.
Chas's Model Railway: December 2013
http://chasmodelrailway.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
An OO gauge model railway. Sunday, December 29, 2013. Seasons Greetings from the Westbay Hotel. As Google had gone to the trouble of adding snow to this image of the incomplete Westbay Hotel, I thought I would post it to illustrate the temperate climate of Westbay. No matter how much it snows, it never settles. Still plenty to do on the hotel in the new year - slating, guttering, balconies, signage and so on which I look forward to doing. In the meantime, a very happy new year to all. I have learned the ...
Julias Modelopolis: September 2014
http://modelopolis.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, 28 September 2014. CNCing about Part 4. Sometimes you think you have figured something out and then it goes and does something else which leaves you baffled. These were modelled up in Inventor and the G Code was generated. I have decided to make them out of 0.5mm thick plasticard as it means I can glue them easily to each other and the wooden laser cut kit. Its also a bit easier to machine (or so I thought). Strange as the feedrate and the spindle speed haven't changed. Its time to have a rethink.
Chas's Model Railway: October 2013
http://chasmodelrailway.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
An OO gauge model railway. Monday, October 28, 2013. Since finishing the parish church I have spent the last few weeks faffing about wondering what to build next. After only a brief few years modelling I am, I'm afraid, hooked and now when I have nothing to work on I feel at a loose end. Perversely though, I couldn't find the motivation to make anything. Very odd. Sunday, October 27, 2013. I have decided two things in the process. First, because I am easily distracted, building a diorama gives me a f...
Chas's Model Railway: January 2014
http://chasmodelrailway.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
An OO gauge model railway. Sunday, January 26, 2014. It's taken me ages to get round to the final few jobs that needed doing to the hotel what with Christmas, general laziness and starting other projects but the previously named Westbay Hotel is now finished. At some point I may get round to changing the hanging sign - my printer is just not fine enough to print anything at that scale which looks half decent. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Julias Modelopolis: Diesel Days (with a bit of steam too)...
http://modelopolis.blogspot.com/2015/07/diesel-days-with-bit-of-steam-too.html
Friday, 24 July 2015. Diesel Days (with a bit of steam too). Since my last post I haven't been totally idle modelling wise although a few ' issues. Its a good feeling to know that once they have some decoders fitted there are two more usable engines, even more so there are two less engines on my ever increasing pile of ' to convert. Finally I must say a really BIG thanks once again to Steve T who has again done an absolute brilliant job with the weathering, the pictures do not do them justice. Ive seen t...

Julias Modelopolis: October 2012
http://modelopolis.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Sunday, 21 October 2012. I have decided to take a bit of a break from the layout. It was getting a bit frustrating and I wasnt doing as good a job with it as I could, that plus the fact I had to remind myself that its a hobby after all and it should be enjoyable! Refreshed with this in my head I have turned once again to my favorite side of the hobby which is designing and building engines. The latest one on my workbench right now is a little 0-4-0 Peckett saddle tank engine. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Julias Modelopolis: January 2015
http://modelopolis.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, 31 January 2015. I thought I would put a blog together for a couple of reasons. The first is a question if its ok? As you can see, I have attacked the lineside shed with the weathering powders and things to try and dirty it up a bit and hopefully make it a little more realistic which I have hopefully achieved. The problem now is the signal box looks a little bit too clean in comparison so my question is what do I do now? Sunday, 25 January 2015. I also was struggling to find any static grass or...
