Not Just Desserts: Politics & rights
http://not-just-desserts.blogspot.com/2008/04/politics-rights.html
There's a meme* that burns me, amid the protests over the Olympics and human rights. Cartoon courtesy of The Independent (UK)]. It's this one: "The Olympics are an event of athleticism first, and then of cultural exchange and world peace. In any case, they should not be politicized." It's one of Beijing's favorite lines. Its (and our) less savory allies like Putin. Are also fond of it, and Beijing claims. But didn't specify his reasons. Worst of all, the Olympics' corporate sponsors. But when you're talk...

Not Just Desserts: Listen to your Elders (and then dress them up, or down)

Listen to your Elders (and then dress them up, or down). It's the 60th anniversary of the. Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year, an amazing document that Eleanor Roosevelt helped to write and get adopted. A recently established group of, well, elder statespeople with several Nob. El Peace laureates among them, have launched a campaign to get people worldwide to commit to the UDHR. Agree that "Every Human Has Rights", as their tagline goes? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A meme from dr. You Are a Question Mark. You seek knowledge and insight in every form possible. You love learning. And while you know a lot, you don't act like a know it all. You're open to learning you're wrong. You ask a lot of questions, collect a lot of data, and always dig deep to find out more. You're naturally curious and inquisitive. You jump to ask a question when the opportunity arises. Your friends see you as interesting, insightful, and thought provoking. You excel in: Higher education.

Not Just Desserts: Burma disaster relief
http://not-just-desserts.blogspot.com/2008/05/burma-disaster-relief.html
In some ways, this is worse than Katrina because it's a poorer country, as bad as the tsunami - maybe worse because Burma's isolation and its insane junta make helping people much more difficult. A US diplomat is estimating that 100,000 may have died. If you want to help, but want to avoid strengthening that regime, the US Campaign for Burma has a donations page. Where you can designate your donation for cyclone relief. And EarthRights International, another great organization, recommends.

Family. October 4, 2007. This is the story of how one bloodline branches into a hundred different rivers. I am one of three children. Neither I nor my brothers have children; when my brothers get older, I suspect this will change. My mother became an aunt at the age of four. It would all be impossible otherwise. My maternal grandfather had at least one sibling. I know little about him and nothing about his family. I vaguely remember meeting his sister when I was maybe three, maybe four. I was at home.

When it has been a while. December 16, 2007. I find it hard to write sometimes. Most times, I guess. I spend most days at some point along a circle: 4:30 am, wake up, take medicine, doze on the couch, eyes open at about ten after five, breakfast, shower, hair, dress, kiss Quinn goodbye, go to work, work, lunch, home, dinner, read, sleep, 4:30 am.
