Fearless Gardening: October 2013
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Saturday, October 12, 2013. The Last Roses of Autumn. We're closing in on mid-October and the last rose blossoms are fading. The heavy morning dew is gilding their elegant buds in a wash of silver, a last breath to preserve their loveliness. I can see the clarion call of winter as the last petals cling like forgotten handkerchiefs. So I encourage you to meander through the world of shrub roses. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Labels: last roses of the year.
Fearless Gardening: July 2013
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Friday, July 5, 2013. A Redbud for Remembrance. This past Sunday my grandmother died. She was 97 and had lived a long, full life. She was my little fiesty Irish granny with a grand sense of humor. She loved a good joke, would hug the breath out of you and made a mean Irish soda bread. She also loved plants. See? Here's mine a couple of years after planting:. So cute and innocent! My husband calls it Snuffaluffagus. Probably time to prune. Labels: farewell to granny.
Fearless Gardening: November 2012
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Monday, November 12, 2012. Taking the Container Garden into Autumn. This year, I didn't plant very many containers due to the drought. It was just too tough keeping them watered. My one expection is the planter box that hangs on the back porch rail. This spring I went for a blowsy romantic look in soft pastels. My husband has a thing for snapdragons, so they are always part of this combination. Blocking the design in chunks. I went for a moody blue sort of theme....
Fearless Gardening: O, Beautiful Tomato!
http://fearlessgardening.blogspot.com/2013/08/o-beautiful-tomato.html
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Wednesday, August 28, 2013. O, Beautiful Tomato! They are bright yellow and tacky as hell, but I don't care. I can move them around easily for maximum sun and water convenience. I also dumped in a solid handful of slow release fertilizer in each bucket. These babies soon overwhelmed my flimsy tomato cages. Next year, maybe I can talk the husband into recreating the Best Tomato Cage Ever based on the barbed wire man traps of WWI. What? Labels: chipmunks got a few too.

The Golden Iris: Bonsai
http://golden-iris.blogspot.com/2012/09/bonsai.html
Wednesday, September 12, 2012. Over the weekend was the Art and Wine Festival. This means street closures, insane traffic, noise, and the questionable aroma of grilling sausage filling my house for 8 hours a day. Of course it also means booths full of all kinds of stuff. Usually I end up buying a piece of jewelry, but the piece I fell in love with turned out to be way, way out of my price range. So I brought home this little guy instead. Anybody out there ever tried to grow a bonsai tree? I had to re-kni...
The Golden Iris: Color Affection
http://golden-iris.blogspot.com/2012/10/color-affection.html
Wednesday, October 17, 2012. It's finished - FINALLY! I am now one of the over 3,800 people who've finished one of these (at least according to Ravelry. I had no idea how long the last rows were until I bound off, washed it, and threw it on the floor to block. My highly technical blocking method: throw it on a sheet on the floor. A very sweet little girl learning to knit at one of the knitting groups I go to asked, "do you even KNOW how many stitches are on your needle right now? Denver Cowl - Free!
The Golden Iris: New Christmas Stockings
http://golden-iris.blogspot.com/2011/12/new-christmas-stockings.html
Thursday, December 29, 2011. Kind of. Like [seemingly] every other knitter out there, I couldn't manage to finish my Christmas knitting on time. Simon's got finished. mine did not. Thankfully Santa understands knitters and filled my [half-knit, still on the needles] stocking anyway. These stockings are from the pattern collection A NEW Family Portrait. Looks wrong - there's too much white against the green pattern and it's drowning it out. I got a couple other gifts (all socks) done in time. Some are...
The Golden Iris: Christine's Stay-on Baby Booties
http://golden-iris.blogspot.com/2012/01/christines-stay-on-baby-booties.html
Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Christine's Stay-on Baby Booties. I'm at the age where it seems like everyone around me is having a baby. I won't go into how terrifying that is. We'll just stick to the knitting part - baby booties, the best quick and easy baby gift there is. Whenever I have to make baby booties, I use one pattern. I don't try new things. I even violate my rule of 'never knit the same thing twice' [okay except maybe for plain socks] because this pattern just works. Contrast soles, yay! I fin...
The Golden Iris: November 2012
http://golden-iris.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 24, 2012. New Free Pattern: the Denver Cowl. We've all been there. Maybe it’s wool fumes, maybe it’s a color (or three) that calls your name, but suddenly you end up with a big skein of variegated yarn and you have no idea what to do with it. Here’s something to try - a big cozy cowl that you can wear wrapped once or twice. The stitch pattern grabs on to short stretches of color and turns them into little starbursts all over the fabric. Laughing photos are the best photos. The pattern ...
The Golden Iris: Hiking the Appalachian Trail
http://golden-iris.blogspot.com/2011/07/hiking-appalachian-trail.html
Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Hiking the Appalachian Trail. And no, that's not some euphemism for "visiting Argentina with questionable company". Over the weekend we flew out to New Jersey to attend a big family reunion and surprise birthday party with my husband's big extended family. Of course now I am covered in bug bites and my legs are still a little tired. But it was well worth it. Did you do anything unusual this weekend? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Denver Cowl - Free! Brighton cowl - $6.
The Golden Iris: September 2012
http://golden-iris.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Wednesday, September 19, 2012. I have finished knitting the back of my Conic. I love the way the silk in this yarn catches the light. Right now Conic has to be on hold for a little while as I catch up on some sample knitting. But soon I'm looking forward to getting started on the sleeves and enjoying some easy knitting in the round. Links to this post. Wednesday, September 12, 2012. So I brought home this little guy instead. Anybody out there ever tried to grow a bonsai tree? Links to this post. The yarn...

The Golden Iris: January 2013
http://golden-iris.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 09, 2013. In looking ahead to the new year, I've also been looking back a little. I was thinking about all the things I did for the first time (or first time in a very. Long time) in 2012. Let's be honest, most of them are pretty insignificant, but that's okay. Ran a mile (for the first time in over 10 years! Drove most of the way across the country (towing a trailer). Ate an oyster (raw! Had a helicopter flying lesson. Of helicopter development and the controls. Coming in for a landing.

Fearless Gardening
Leaping into horticulture boots first. Sunday, March 25, 2018. We seek out the color blue in the landscape. Bluestone, blue spruce, blue glazed containers, bluebells, blue hosta, and more are all prized. Perhaps because a blue sky is a clear sign that all is well, the storms have passed? The implied distance of an open sky brightens our mood and makes us feel safe? Sunday, March 4, 2018. Small Moments of Spring. Snow crocus basking in the sun. These tiny gems are scattered like a handful of confetti acro...
