The Feather and the Flower: Blue Birds [Unexpectations]
http://featherflower.blogspot.com/2010/04/blue-birds-unexpectations.html
The Feather and the Flower. I arise every morning torn between the desire to save the world and the desire to savor the world. It makes it hard to plan the day." - E. B. White. Tuesday, April 27, 2010. George Carlin famously asked, "Where is the blue food? Something that has nagged at me for years. Blueberries? Blue on the vine," he points out, "purple on the plate.". But what you don't find are Blue Storks, because generally you don't find storks that are blue in the wild. The BBC reports here. Well, be...

The Feather and the Flower. I arise every morning torn between the desire to save the world and the desire to savor the world. It makes it hard to plan the day." - E. B. White. Friday, January 29, 2010. I'm Going Bowling [Fun and Games]. I should clarify that I don't mean the ancient sport of kings. No, my casual use of "bowling" is the more active but less known world of competitive birding, in this case a challenge known as the Superbowl of Birding. So, who am I spending the weekend with? I know there ...

The Feather and the Flower. I arise every morning torn between the desire to save the world and the desire to savor the world. It makes it hard to plan the day." - E. B. White. Sunday, May 9, 2010. Biggest Week in American Birding [Alternatives]. It's almost here, the biggest week in American birding! Yes, this afternoon I'll be heading east on I-86 to . . . what's that? Right, I'm not that geographically challenged. Anyway, I'll be heading east . . . what? I won't be blogging, possibly I'll throw a twee...

The Feather and the Flower. I arise every morning torn between the desire to save the world and the desire to savor the world. It makes it hard to plan the day." - E. B. White. Sunday, February 14, 2010. My Dog is a What? Today is a significant milestone. Barron, among the best friends I've had in my lifetime, turns fifteen years old today - Happy Birthday, good buddy! I recently gave an overview of his personality. Recently we sent a vial of blood to the Wisdom Panel lab. Because a mixed-breed dog’...

Conservation Conversations: Aiming to Transform
http://conservationconversations.blogspot.com/2011/10/aiming-to-transform.html
Reflections on environmental education, conservation, wildlife issues, and birds; primarily of Southwest Missouri. Sunday, October 9, 2011. The Power of Myth. Throughout human history, cultures have used rites of passage to signify the importance of life transitions. Our own society still recognizes and celebrates transitions with weddings, baby showers, anniversaries, and funerals, but little is communicated about the role of these events in the human maturation process. Graduation exercises have become...

Conservation Conversations: When the student is ready.....
http://conservationconversations.blogspot.com/2012/05/when-student-is-ready.html
Reflections on environmental education, conservation, wildlife issues, and birds; primarily of Southwest Missouri. Monday, May 21, 2012. When the student is ready. His song rang out like a cathedral bell at dawn. A rush of adrenaline increased our momentum as we descended toward the spring branch. Again, his alluring melody arose from this lush cane sanctuary. We stopped to capture this moment, to feel the intensity of this melody. This bird was no ordinary bird, and this quest was no ordinary quest.

Wednesday, July 21, 2010. One of the only ways to catch large numbers of shorebirds away from the breeding grounds is to use cannon nets. Cannon nets are exactly what they sound like. They are nets that are propelled by small cannons. While I was in Chile, I learned the basics of cannon netting, and in the process, realized that it is difficult, and whether or not a firing is successful depends a lot on luck. So, the first step of cannon netting is to set the net and the cannons up. It was important to m...
Snakes: 10/17/09

Saturday, October 17, 2009. Next to snakes, frogs and other amphibians are some of the coolest creatures on the planet. They are cooler than most people in my opinion. Frogs are also thought to be good indicators of environmental conditions because they cannot tolerate very much pollution in the water. Leopard frogs are very common in the southern United States, but not all that common in the north. Some more shots of frogs:. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Sunday, November 24, 2013. Definitely not, but this milk snake sub species has me captive and there is nothing I can do about it. I have looked directly into the eyes of medusa and it is too late for me. Don't let this happen to you. The first Utah Milk Snakes that I found were purely accidental. Dumb luck! Friday, January 28, 2011. Gulls, Part 1. But, what is a gull? Gulls are part of the order Charadriiformes. Within this large, diverse order, the gulls (part of the family Laridae) are part of the suborder Lari. The Laridae is sister to the skuas/jaegers (Stercorariidae) and the auks (Alcidae). These families are in turn sister to the Crab Plover (Dromadidae) and coursers/pratincoles (Glareolidae). In the Lari, the button quail (Turnicidae) are sister to the rest of the group (Baker et al. 2005) found the...

Thursday, November 12, 2009. Yesterday I went to go scrape the white paint band off of an old RCW cavity tree when a piece of unpainted bark got up and walked out of the path of my bark knife. Yeah, I was surprised, too. Do you see it? Here's a better look:. It turns out this piece of legged bark has a name: the Grizzled Mantis ( Gonatista grisea. It kept skittering in a quick crab-walk around the trunk as I chased it in circles with my camera. I did manage a few more pictures:. Links to this post. That ...
Snakes: Western Toads
http://snakeadventures.blogspot.com/2010/07/western-toads.html
Tuesday, July 20, 2010. Toads are really cool creatures. They're a lot less slimy than frogs, but they seem to have a never-ending supply of pee when you pick them up. A close-up shot of a western toad reveals some cool markings. The black and gold pattern in their eyes is awesome. A light rain while road cruising brought out dozens of these, even in areas far away from any body of water. The toads were content to sit on hands. A group photo was a lot trickier:. Let me get back to the bugs.
