The Feedsack Dress: Books
http://feedsackkids.typepad.com/feedsack_dress/books
Recalling 1949 in fiction and fact. March 16, 2012. Ending an educational era. In my one-room rural school, doing research meant going to The World Book, a set of encyclopedias that contained a little bit about almost everything. My teacher sent me there, for example, when I argued that a whale couldn’t be a mammal because it was a fish. Discarding any book distresses me, but nothing hurt so much as putting my 30-year-old Brittanica in the trash. Like most students and adults, I now do most of my prelimi...
The Feedsack Dress: Starting school in the heat
http://feedsackkids.typepad.com/feedsack_dress/2011/08/starting-school-in-the-heat.html
Recalling 1949 in fiction and fact. August 21, 2011. Starting school in the heat. Thanks to air conditioning, schools now start in August rather than waiting for September’s cooler weather as we did in the mid-20. Century. Living on the farm, I experienced air conditioning mostly by going to cowboy movies on Saturday afternoons and musicals on Sunday afternoon. Our steaming bodies must have raised the room temperature several degrees when we came inside. The teacher would read us a chapter of a book ...
The Feedsack Dress: Wearing feedsack dresses
http://feedsackkids.typepad.com/feedsack_dress/2011/09/wearing-feedsack-dresses.html
Recalling 1949 in fiction and fact. September 11, 2011. Writer Eva Ridenour sent me this recollection of wearing feedsack dresses. My two sisters and I all had feedsack dresses that our mother made from the same pink flowered pattern. It had a plain white insert in the front and we wore them only when we were dressed up. I have a picture of the three of us when I was about six or seven years old and my youngest sister was about two. Sep 11, 2011 11:33:24 AM. Is it like a sack with no curvature at all?

Recalling 1949 in fiction and fact. May 31, 2012. Where have all the Patricias gone? When I went to high school graduations in the 1950s, I amused myself by counting names in the program. Elizabeth and Patricia usually won as the most common first names for girls, and John and William usually edged out James and Robert for boys. Often my middle name, Ann, outnumbered all other middle names. May 31, 2012 8:55:54 PM. March 26, 2012. Saluting Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Neither did the paragraph or so about her...

All 1949 is scary but exciting for farm girl Gail Albright. When she begins junior high at the nearby town of Craigsburg, Gail has no idea of the struggles and friendships she will find. He's the butt of jokes made by class snob Veronica Holt and Veronica's stuck-up clique. And they especially make fun of Gail for wearing a feedsack dress her mother made. Ith a little help from her friends, Gail might just pull it off. It's a wonderful story, compellingly told, and while aimed at an audience of younger p...

Monday, July 8, 2013. Big Green Mean Machine Soup. This soup looks like grasssy mulch water, but trust, it is tasty and fresh as can be - like sipping on a Spring garden. This soup is also a dream for using up CSA staples such as kale, collards, etc. "kitchen sink" style. Spinach is the base so you will need quite a bit. I used one family sized pre-washed bag of organic spinach. Customize this recipe with whatever green you have on hand! Taste frequently and adjust to your taste. Collards - 2-3 leaves.
