The Feeling Brain

The purpose of this blog is to exchange thoughts on the course readings for Leah Olson and Elizabeth Johnston's spring 2007 Sarah Lawrence College course, The Feeling Brain: The Biology and Psychology of Emotions. Each week a quarter of the students will be assigned as that week's bloggers. Their job is to comment extensively on the class readings, relating them to previous readings where appropriate, and to pose questions for the group discussion in our Wednesday seminar meeting.

The Feeling Brain: 4/29/07 - 5/6/07

http://feelingbrain.blogspot.com/2007_04_29_archive.html

Sunday, April 29, 2007. The connection between morals and emotions is surprisingly strong. As Joshua Greene wrote in his article, “How (and where) Does Moral Judgment Work? 8221;, emotion is a significant aspect in moral judgment. There is now neuro-imaging and fMRI testing that can support the correlation and studies on pre-frontal cortex damage in children and adults is also discovering the connection between morality and emotions. Why is it that there is this onset of sociopath-like behavior? Greene a...

The Feeling Brain: The Feeling of Feeling in Control and its Health Benefits

http://feelingbrain.blogspot.com/2007/04/feeling-of-feeling-in-control-and-its.html

Sunday, April 22, 2007. The Feeling of Feeling in Control and its Health Benefits. Social status seems in some ways to be a very primal assessment and it appears that some of us care about it more than others. Is status assessed consciously and/or unconsciously? What are the mechanisms of how we make and weigh these assessments and how do they affect us biologically? Does decreasing our experience of “wanting” correlate at all to feeling “in control”? Maybe we can experience the same benefits from thinki...

http://feelingbrain.blogspot.com/2007_04_22_archive.html

Friday, April 27, 2007. Moral cognition and neuroethics. This week’s readings focused on moral cognition and neuroethics. I thought that Greene and Haidt’s article “How (and where) does Moral Judgment Work? If so, does this have to do with the amount of stored moral and social knowledge? This also raising questions for me concerning sociopaths. I’m assuming Green and Haidt are referring to children who literally had damage done to their brain like Gage, but what about strictly environmentally p...Greene ...

The Feeling Brain: Emotions, Stress, and Health

http://feelingbrain.blogspot.com/2007/04/emotions-stress-and-health.html

Tuesday, April 24, 2007. Emotions, Stress, and Health. I found the article, “The Influence of Facial Feedback on Race Bias” to be particularly interesting. As we have learned this semester, emotional states involve bodily reactions. This article asked whether manipulating a bodily response could affect an emotional response. And, interestingly, it can. The link between emotion and reaction can be, to some extent, consciously manipulated. And I thought this article tested this in an interesting way.

http://feelingbrain.blogspot.com/2007_01_28_archive.html

Monday, January 29, 2007. Response for 1/31-reconceiving what we are looking for. In the first three chapters of Descartes’ Error. In chapter 4 of The Emotional Brain. The article Functional Neuroimaging Studies of Human Emotions. The last article, The Structure of Emotion. This last article raises the issue Elizabeth and Leah were suggesting we look at next, the role of language in understanding emotion. How specific is our language for emotion really? Sunday, January 28, 2007. This week’s reading...
