Riding Comrie Croft trails. Riding Comrie Croft trails. July 26, 2015. Until this week I hadn’t ridden the trails around the upper part of Comrie Croft, although I had been up there photographing others in action, as at the recent Cream o’ the Croft. I had previously ridden the blue trail from below the upper wood to the hostel buildings with Fiona ‘Outdoors’ Russell. That is a lovely, sloping section of trails with flowing bumps and berms that make it feel like a roller coaster. Once back in the saddle ...

James Aitken

Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park. Jim Aitken was a well-known Scottish naturalist and landscape gardener, who had a nursery at Orchardbank on the slopes of Barnhill in Perth. When he died in November 2003, aged 90, he left money in his will to revive the Kinnoull Hill Arboretum, which had originally been established as part of the Kinfauns policies. Jim Aitken was born on 13 January, 1913 and spent his early years on the Balgowan Estate, near Perth, where his father was a gardener. Around 1920 his family ...

Tuesday, 29 July 2014. Scourie Bay, Sutherland. One of the first places we visited on our recent holiday to the far north west of Scotland, was Scourie Bay. A beautiful inlet of turquoise water, surrounded by a rocky coastline. A stunning sandy beach lines the head of the inlet, and there is also a hide filled with useful information on the area and its wildlife. Ringed Plovers scurried across the white sands, their little legs seemingly moving at warp speed! Old Man of Stoer. Great Skua, aka 'Bonxie'.

Monday, 1 June 2015. Eagle Antics Celebrates Scotland's 100 White-tailed Eagle Pairs. The news broke last week on BBC Springwatch. That Scotland's White-tailed Eagle population has reached a milestone, with the 100th breeding pair reached this year. Not only that, but the 100th pair are the first in Orkney for 142 years! To celebrate this milestone, I was asked recently if I would create an Eagle Antics. Cartoon ready for the big reveal. Part one: Who will win? Congratulations to Scotland's 100!

Wednesday, 17 September 2014. Return to Mull, September 2014. I finally made a return to Mull this year after my earlier week there in March. This time I was camping, so only managed a night's stay, but there was plenty of White-tailed Eagle action for me to enjoy during my short visit. Within half an hour of arriving, we were walking alongside Loch na Keal and two White-tailed Eagles flew over, heading out across the loch. Two juveniles soaring by the Red Deer, a great size comparison. Before the youngs...

Tuesday, 19 August 2014. Smoo Cave, Sutherland. The day started overcast as we arrived at the car park for Smoo Cave. Having walked down the flight of steps, we were greeted by the huge entrance to Smoo Cave, carved out of the surrounding limestone. Inside the cave, we walked to the viewing platform and saw the waterfall, cascading down from the river above. The cliffs echoed to the sounds of nesting Fulmars. Looking back to the cave entrance. Wednesday, 6 August 2014. And used with his kind permission.

http://wildlifescotland.blogspot.com/2015/04/isle-of-mull-march-2015-part-3-weather.html
Friday, 24 April 2015. Isle of Mull, March 2015: Part 3 - Weather Extremes. A very wet and windy start to the day, with a new dusting of snow gracing the top of the higher hills. The forecast showed it would get worse as the day progressed, so we decided on a nearby walk along Glen Forsa. Battered by the wind and torrential rain - we only went out so Mr Labrador could have his walk - I just about managed to spot Curlew, a couple of Greylag Geese, two Buzzards and plenty of soggy Highland cattle. A short ...

Friday, 15 May 2015. Gullane and North Berwick - 5th April 2015. Photos taken on 5th April - it's taken me this long to look at the photos! A warm day and plenty of sunshine once the early fog cleared, and the bonus of a couple of exciting sightings: Red and Black-throated Divers. Carrion Crows on Gullane Beach. Carrion Crows, with Gannets above their heads as they fly in the distance. Red-throated Diver in winter plumage. Roe Deer bounces away over the dunes, its rump like two white pom poms!

May the positive ideas and messages that spring out of my poetic reflections blossom in the soul and mind of my readers, just as the bud on the cover of this book suggests. They were written in the purpose of examining human problems and proposing solutions that are viable and positive. What with fakery in the art world, i.e. the supposed Caravaggio that was recently unearthed inside someone’s attic which to my mind, incidentally looks like a complete fake!
