Specifically addressing an issue that occasionally arises on my eeePC running OSX 10.6 Snowleopard: it tries to start from a hibernate image (i.e. the screen shows a greyed-out image of the Mac desktop with a segmented progress bar along the bottom) - which never completes restoring and freezes at some point near the end.
