History of Fernland Historical Park:. Many of the buildings that are present in Fernland Historical Park were acquired by Carroll and Mae Tharp. Mr. and Mrs. Tharp spent 20 years painstakingly relocating, and restoring these buildings. Mr. Tharp, a trained preservation architect and a former board member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, took great care to ensure the authenticity of their restoration. In addition to the above buildings, the Arnold-Simonton House.

The Jardine cabin was built by James Jardine (sometimes spelled "Jordan") who migrated to Texas from Ireland in 1826 and settled in Jose Vehlein's Colony. The cabin, one of the oldest extant log structures in Texas, is a typical single pen, story-and-a-half hand hewn log cabin with front and back porches and mud cat chimney. Moved from Walker to Montgomery County in 1976 and restored by B. Carroll and Mae Tharp. Interesting article on the history and original site.

Now situated as the focal point within Fernland Historical Park, the white house with its dentil trim features a pair of rooms on either side of an enclosed central hall. The rooms share interior double fireplaces, reflecting a Connecticut influence. The Arnold-Simonton home was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1964 and entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Located within the heart of downtown Montgomery, Fernland Historical park is a unique hands-on educational park, bringing samples of early Texas architecture together with examples of early Texas life. The log homes and cabins presented within the park are some of the oldest remaining structures within Texas. The park is located within the heart of the City of Montgomery.
