Leiomyomata (fibroids) are the most common benign soft tissue tumors in women. Up to 77% of women have microscopic or macroscopic uterine fibroids at the time of menopause (Cramer 1990); fibroids occur in all ethnic groups examined, but are more common in African-American than Caucasian women. What This Study Involves. The study takes about 5-months, from baseline screening to the end of an average recovery time following the hysterectomy. The first month is a baseline cycle during which we establish that the patient is healthy and fulfills the study requirements. She then begins taking the study drug for about 3 months, after which receives a complete abdominal hysterectomy. Imaging studies: MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), a vaginal ultrasound, and a sonohysterogram are done at the NIH.
