Wednesday, May 17, 2006. That night, I slept hard, and dreamt of drums and waves of rain washing over the landscape, coming up from the south, laden with moisture and sulphur from the volcanoes. When I woke up, it was still dark and was indeed raining. And then the first bird sang. And felt unimaginably graceful. After reading Quiet Noise , my friend just wrote to tell me that the sound of a single-engine plane in the quiet, brings her back to pink crenoline pjs, and summer, and sitting on the front porch, and feeling safe. A place to retreat to, in meditation. Which made me think: where I retreat when I meditate is Malibu. Not beach-bum Maaallliiiibbuuuu.

Tuesday, May 23, 2006. Hakalau Forest (This Land is Your Land). Hawaii, in its native, pre-contact state, was extremely ecologically fragile. As a result of European contact, a gale of new species got to Hawaii over the past few hundred years. Post-contact Hawaii has been the scene of biological and botanical violence that is not easily perceived by a causal onlooker. One needs a trained eye. Or one needs a trained eye along, to point it all out. See koa photo below). As a bright, unfamiliar bird flew by.
