Fieldgreens

Thursday, June 16, 2016. Last year my spinach crop was mostly decimated by the time I figured out it wasn't blight but a creature that was eating it. Once you know what to look for, the signs of leaf miner are obvious and unmistakable. The trail of a leaf miner in chard. Leaf miner damage to a beet seedling. So now I keep them in check by rubbing the eggs off the leaves before they hatch. The eggs are easy to spot - tiny tight rows of tiny white eggs on the backs of the affected crop. So finally this yea...

Fieldgreens: Wisteria!

http://fieldgreens.blogspot.com/2010/05/wisteria.html

Monday, May 31, 2010. It smells so sweet. This is my wisteria's 4th year with me, and it's first bloom (I have two plants on different posts of my arbor). I pruned the heck out of it last spring and late winter, following the advice of some you-tube videos. I'm still not sure it bloomed where they said it would, and whether my pruning was instrumental or incidental. But I don't care, because it's beautiful. Here is an early bud, when I was still just hoping that that's actually what it was:.

Fieldgreens: July 2008

http://fieldgreens.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 20, 2008. Half of the last bag of frozen green beans from last season went into a salad of millet, white beans, peas (from the farmer's market, I didn't grow enough) and toasted walnuts with a walnut oil and thyme vinegar vinegrette. This years' crop is just trickling in but I'm holding out hope for late summer. Also shown are vases of flowering dill and arugula. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Fieldgreens: June 2009

http://fieldgreens.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, June 23, 2009. How agitated I am when I am in the garden,. And how happy I am to be so agitated. How vexed I often am when I am in the garden,. And how happy I am to be so vexed. Just the way I thought it would,. Nothing looks just the way. I had imagined it,. And when sometimes it does look. Like what I had imagined. And this, thank God, is rare). That my imagination is so ordinary. Mystery cucurbit - a rotted watermelon? The legacy of the tossed remains of the last. Growing in the compost.

Fieldgreens: Resilient Roots

http://fieldgreens.blogspot.com/2016/06/poppies.html

Tuesday, June 7, 2016. So finally this year I decided to flout the super-dominant advice that poppies "hate to have their roots disturbed" and therefore shouldn't be started indoors. For several years now I have been starting my indoor seeds in soil blocks, which minimize root disruption vs. pots. So I started a dozen or more poppies - a mix of Hungarian Blue Breadseed and Ladybird. I have high hopes for a future filled with cheap, beautiful, indoor-started poppies. Field Grazing | a Sandbrook Meadow Farm blog

A Sandbrook Meadow Farm blog. Farmer Alex’s Winter Update. We seem to be in the midst of a tug-of-war battle between winter and spring. Old man winter is putting up a decent fight here as of late, considering the poor showing over the past few months. Still, for the second straight year it didn’t feel like we experienced much of a winter at all. Hopefully I’m not speaking too soon. We heard spring peepers on February 28th! How is it produced? What happens to this after I no longer need it? With the sun s...
