Field Crops - NoGo Fields

http://www.fieldselection.co.uk/nogo.html

Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club. Field Crops - for Glider Pilots. Return to Home Page. For a variety of reasons some fields have hazards that can or will give you grief. Some of those reasons are listed and illustrated on this page. Setaside after a late root crop harvest - e.g. Sugar Beet. Wheel Marks from the Air. This one has the big give away of marked colour/texture change. But can you see the wire? Links to other Field Crop Pages. Return to Home Page.

Field Crops - Peas

http://www.fieldselection.co.uk/peas.html

Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club. Field Crops - for Glider Pilots. Return to Home Page. Peas are sown in April into fine smooth seedbeds and initially appear as a fine light green colour in early May. In mid June the crop flowers with a white petals and after flowering becomes very tangled in appearance. This crop is unlikely to become too tall for landing before the middle of June and some dwarf crops may never get more than 25cm high. Peas show as a pale green colour with the ground almost always...

Field Crops - Sugar Beet

http://www.fieldselection.co.uk/sugarbeet.html

Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club. Field Crops - for Glider Pilots. Return to Home Page. Sugar beet is sown into a fine level seedbed in late March/early April and is slow to become visible from the air. When it is first seen it appears as thin green rows 50cm apart. The crop will grow steadily until the crop rows meet during June and the field will then appear a more uniform colour. This image shows that sugar beet will still appear largely brown from the air. But the ground image shows the tru...

Field Crops - Wnter Wheat

http://www.fieldselection.co.uk/winterwheat.html

Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club. Field Crops - for Glider Pilots. Return to Home Page. Winter wheat is sown in the autumn between September and November in a normal year, however in the case of a wet autumn this is extended into January or even early February. As a result crops are at widely varying growth stages so this page will show crops at the most forward of the range as this is likely to be of most interest to glider pilots. Sorry no aerial photo. Sorry no aerial photo. Now too tall for saf...

Field Crops - Potatoes

http://www.fieldselection.co.uk/potatoes.html

Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club. Field Crops - for Glider Pilots. Return to Home Page. Potatoes are sown in March/ April into raised beds and will initially appear as a dark green line as the plants emerge. The crop will initially fill along the lines and then across between the rows by around the end of June. Landing here at any time will be unpopular at best and may well result in damage to the glider. NOT SUITABLE FOR LANDING. Sorry no aerial photo. Planted in beds around 25cm deep. This fl...
