Finchers: Public and private can make excellent bedfellows, especially in treating cancer
http://finchersconsulting.blogspot.com/2013/05/public-and-private-can-make-excellent.html
Saturday, 18 May 2013. Public and private can make excellent bedfellows, especially in treating cancer. I was recently asked to write about the future for my latest blog in Health Insurance Magazine and I included a plea for increased cooperation between the public and private sectors. As I wrote ‘There are still some Neanderthals out there who subscribe to the public good, private bad mantra’. This laboratory is targeting 11 (rising to 35 by July) genetic abnormalities using samples collected from a tra...

Tuesday, 30 July 2013. The NHS Direct/111 confusion epitomises the problems with government health policy. Reported earlier this month showed they had lost £2.8m since April and were " heading for a deficit of £26m if we continue to run the same volume of 111 services until the end of this financial year". This is a new embarrassment for the embattled coalition health team as another plan fails to quite come together as predicted. Which had led to nurses being replaced by computers. The Lib Dem peer,.

Finchers: February 2013

Sunday, 24 February 2013. How to fix the NHS? Let’s start at the very beginning. How do you fix the NHS? How do we bring about change? The NHS has often been compared to the Titanic, both in size and mortality, but the major issue is neither, it’s the speed at which it can change direction that’s the problem. Adopt a clear vision and strategy:. Start at the top:. No-one can now argue that the culture of the NHS needs serious attention. How do you change culture? Involve every layer and create ownership:.

Finchers: October 2012

Sunday, 21 October 2012. Science vs. religion? 8211; sounds a bit like the politics of healthcare. His predecessor, Andrew Lansley seemed to be oblivious of much evidence based research and designed his reforms not based on science but his own form of religion – strongly held beliefs but little evidential back up. We are constantly bombarded with new pearls of wisdom from health researchers, especially when it comes to lifestyle and surgical options. Ah well – a girl can dream…. Thursday, 11 October 2012.

Finchers: June 2013
http://finchersconsulting.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Saturday, 22 June 2013. Who should watch the watchers? Like many others, I believe in the ultimate goodness of the majority of people, especially those involved with the care and protection of others. So of course I, like many others, hoped that the tranche of scandals emerging from a closer scrutiny of the NHS would now be over. But we were wrong. This most recent disclosure of the failings of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is perhaps the most shocking lapse of morality of all. This is heavy stuff.

Finchers: Good public health policy takes courage
http://finchersconsulting.blogspot.com/2013/07/good-public-health-policy-takes-courage_20.html
Saturday, 20 July 2013. Good public health policy takes courage. I was sitting in the Friday afternoon rush hour traffic yesterday and glanced to my right to see the epitome of a public health nightmare sitting in the car next to mine. Is this man a lost cause? Possibly. Does he know that his habits are life limiting? Probably. Will he do anything about it? Because it’s the law. We know that educational programmes help enormously as at least the general public now know that smoking kills, excess alcohol ...

Saturday, 23 March 2013. Commissioning – we must keep the fox out of the chicken coup. This entirely predictable predicament now has to be subject to guidance to be issued by the NHS Commissioning Board. Ideally – there should be an independent organisation to commission clinical services in a region. Ah yes – there used to be. They were called Primary Care Trusts, and they are due to be abolished next month. Posted by Finchers Consulting. Saturday, 16 March 2013. Perhaps it’s because I was brought...
