But the UK and European governments are in the process of extending the protection of our marine environment by creating a network of ‘marine protected areas’ – areas that have some level of restriction to protect living, non-living, cultural or historic resources. We helped them to play a role in recommending which areas of the Irish Sea should receive further environmental protection, and what form that protection should take. For Marine Conservation Zones were passed to the government in August 2011. We were one of four similar projects around England and Wales. The other regional projects were Net Gain.
