Finding the Fulcrum

Wednesday, July 29, 2015. I don't get mad, I get odd. This started as a comment in someone else's FB post, and then I decided that it was enough of its own thing that I should put it here. It was a post on the subject of gun violence and gun control. The quote that inspired my reaction was, "It's time to get mad. We do no have to be nice to these people.". Yeah, I thought so. Yes You need to acknowledge their stance as valid, even if you disagree with it. Be interpreted. But that's a different debate...

Finding the Fulcrum: November 2008

http://www.findingthefulcrum.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 17, 2008. Why our economic system needs more sex. A lot of people are resistant to the current round of bailouts because they amount to corporate socialism. Or because it rewards the jerks who ran the companies amok in the first place, and incents bad behavior. On the other hand, a lot of people are afraid not to bail out the companies that have screwed themselves up so badly because those companies are "too big to fail". It's true, they are. So fix it. This is the natural order of things.

Finding the Fulcrum: March 2010

http://www.findingthefulcrum.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 9, 2010. A little wine, a little beer. I've been watching the current round of debate on New York State allowing the sales of wine in grocery stores with some interest. I also watched the last time, when it got lobbied to death. I, for one, like the idea that if I want wine with dinner instead of beer, I can get it without a special trip to a different store. Then, I stumbled upon the fact that Pennsylvania is debating the exact same thing, except with respect to beer. In the end, I suspec...

Finding the Fulcrum: May 2008

http://www.findingthefulcrum.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Tuesday, May 27, 2008. The health care system in the US is broken. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. And that, I think, is part of the problem. Our health care system has been dominated by a market philosophy which simply doesn't work. Why doesn't free-market philosophy apply to health care? So, what are the factors in the health care world that break this model:. 3) No basis for comparison. How can you evaluate the quality of care from various providers? What else is out there?

Finding the Fulcrum: Mortgage slaw

http://www.findingthefulcrum.blogspot.com/2008/10/mortgage-slaw.html

Wednesday, October 1, 2008. Okay folks, we all know we're in this mess because of mortgage-backed securities, right? Good So what the heck is a mortgage-backed security, how did they become such a problem? Mortgage-backed securities are a specific type of Collateralized Debt Obligation (or CDO). There are other kinds of CDOs out there, but they all take the same basic form, so let's illustrate with mortgages, 'cause that's what's in our epicenter right now anyway. What does the bank get out of this?

Uncle Mikey Explains the Inexplicable: MN Supreme Court upholds Instant Runoff Voting in Minneapolis

http://mikey-explains.blogspot.com/2009/06/mn-supreme-court-upholds-instant-runoff.html

Uncle Mikey Explains the Inexplicable. In which a self-proclaimed pundit presumes to parse the thorny thicket of media madness and get to the heart of the issues of the day. MN Supreme Court upholds Instant Runoff Voting in Minneapolis. The Minneapolis IRV system has never actually been implemented, yet, so this challenge was not to the application. Of the ordinance, but to the concept. As such, the court rejected a host of theoretical arguments, both against and for. So, in order for the IRV ordinance t...

The quasi-State of the Union speech. First of all, President Obama (and I still get a happy thrill down my spine hearing, saying, or reading or typing that phrase) doesn't know. For one thing, can you imagine how long the speech would have been if it had. More than 50 minutes, I'll tell you that right now. For another thing, nobody w...

Uncle Mikey Explains the Inexplicable. In which a self-proclaimed pundit presumes to parse the thorny thicket of media madness and get to the heart of the issues of the day. For the most part, I'm all right with that. I don't need the ceremony. I need- this country needs- what comes after. I don't expect miracles. I just expect adequacy, after eight years of supremely inadequate leadership, supremely deficient decisions. The day I will be most jubilant is the day everyone looks at the inauguration of an ...

It's also being exacerbated, a little bit, by a certain batshit-crazy congresswoman from slightly north of my current location, who, thank heaven, is not my representative. Uncle Mikey Explains the Inexplicable. In which a self-proclaimed pundit presumes to parse the thorny thicket of media madness and get to the heart of the issues of the day. Gravity Continues to Assert Itself. But to me, the more interesting, and potentially more dire news comes from the heretofore neglected realm of agriculture. Wrong The price of crops has crashed along with the rest of the commodities market. Right now, a bushel of winter wheat would go for about $5, but cost about $6 to grow. As well...

Uncle Mikey Explains the Inexplicable. In which a self-proclaimed pundit presumes to parse the thorny thicket of media madness and get to the heart of the issues of the day. But that's not what I'm here to talk about right now. But by starting so early, and naming such high-profile, intelligent, active individuals to the roles, it looks a lot like a shadow government. On the other hand, I have to say that I have few complaints with his choices so far, both for those top jobs and for others that have been...
