Divinipotent Daily: November 2014
http://divinipotent.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Dedicated to saving the endangered word "divinipotent". Saturday, November 15, 2014. The autumn leaves of 2014. Autumn came late to New York City this year, and perhaps because of the mild summer, it came strange. Trees that are normally mousy, like the oaks that generally turn brown, were on fire. The basswoods, which are usually my favorites, where monochromatic. So few leaves were on the ground that I asked my husband to come with me to grab a few from the trees. Basswood leaves most years. 2013: The ...

Last weekend I read an excerpt from Michael Hainey's new book, After Visiting Friends: A Son's Story. The title of the excerpt was "My dad: 35 and dead." You can read it here. Dad at my sister Betsy's wedding,. About six months before he died. Mind you, this is probably a false memory – science tells us that the act of remembering rewrites history....In any ...

My mother was a shy woman who grew up with three aggressive sisters and parents who didn't get along. But I don't think that's why her musical taste was so melancholy; it's just the way she was. Divinipotent Daily: Arts & Crafts: Color by Nature
http://divinipotent.blogspot.com/2010/11/arts-crafts-color-by-nature.html
Dedicated to saving the endangered word "divinipotent". Monday, November 15, 2010. Arts and Crafts: Color by Nature. When we were children, we would arrange autumn leaves and Crayola shavings between sheets of wax paper. Then we would iron the wax paper until the Crayola shavings melted and the sheets held together. When we were done, we would bring our waxy autumn leaf montages to school and hang them on the wall. It was a homework assignment. Would have seen this phenomenon as a kindred spirit, I think.

Ageblind: Corporations Are Learning Disabled
http://ageblind.blogspot.com/2009/08/corporations-are-learning-disabled.html
Collaboration, the end of retirement and the evolving world of work. Saturday, August 1, 2009. Corporations Are Learning Disabled. Spend sufficient time in a large corporation and you are likely to discover that your employer is a slow learner. The larger the company, the more severe the problem. CEOs generally attribute the glacial pace of change to the size of their enterprise; for example, the CEO of my former employer compared moving the company in a new direction to turning an aircraft carrier.

Ageblind: August 2009
http://ageblind.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Collaboration, the end of retirement and the evolving world of work. Wednesday, August 26, 2009. As I walked toward the waterfront this morning, my mind filled with thoughts of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, the bells of the local Catholic church rang out in an extended carillon. That ancient sound brought to mind one of the less-discussed lessons to be learned from the life of Senator Kennedy: the importance of time. Senator Kennedy, however, stands as proof of the continuing value of a principle from a ...

Ageblind: It's Time to Retire "Retirement Age"
http://ageblind.blogspot.com/2009/08/its-time-to-retire-retirement-age.html
Collaboration, the end of retirement and the evolving world of work. Sunday, August 2, 2009. It's Time to Retire "Retirement Age". The term "retirement age" has lost its relevance. When the eligibility age for Social Security was first set in 1935, the average American lifespan was 61.7 years. Today, thanks to some great leaps forward in medicine, it's 77.8 years. Longer Lives = Longer Careers. Only 15% said it was unlikely. But where will these older workers find employment? Do Older Workers Face Discri...

In February of 2005 I gave a speech at a national speechwriters conference in Washington, D.C., sponsored by Lawrence Ragan Communications, Inc. In the speech, I offered a few words on how I view the speechwriters craft. If you want to know what I would be like to work with, this will give you the general idea. Say that youre at a party, and you meet someone new. In the course of getting acquainted, you mention that youre a speechwriter. How does the other person react? In the process, youre also delving...

Ageblind: Old and Obsolete

Collaboration, the end of retirement and the evolving world of work. Sunday, November 22, 2009. The four stages of man are infancy, childhood, adolescence, and obsolescence.". It's been a while since I last posted here, but the big silence is over. To kick things off, I'm pointing you toward some wry observations about age and obsolescence made by a couple of very clever people. In a brief, extremely witty analysis of Greenspun's "logic," Professor Baron draws everyone from Al Gore to Socrates and everyt...
