The area now taken up by the Sutton Estate, at the junction of City Road and Old Street was known in the 1940s as the Vinegar Ground. Site of the old 'Vinegar Ground', at the N.E. corner of Old St and City Rd. The Sarson’s Vinegar factory, which was on the site for 100 years, had long gone when the first houses were built there. Sarsons receipt, 1843, and company stationery from 1921.

The square is named after the Marquis of Northampton who owned the land when it was laid out in the early 1800s. The gardens were first opened to the public in 1885.
